Box Score AMHERST, Mass.– The Trinity College Women's Ice Hockey team traveled to Amherst College on Saturday evening to wrap up their NESCAC series, but fell 4-1 to the Mammoths. The loss dropped the Bantams to 9-12 overall and 6-8 in conference play, while Amherst improved to 16-5-1 overall and 9-4-1 in NESCAC action.
Amherst struck first with two quick goals late in the opening period, both coming in the final minute, to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission. The Bantams entered the second period trailing, with the Mammoths holding the upper hand.
Trinity got on the scoreboard with 1:12 remaining in the second frame, when junior Marta Mazzocchi found an opening after a loose puck in front of the Amherst net. Her quick shot cut the deficit to 2-1 as the teams headed into the third period.
The third period saw a 4v4 battle at the 4:46 mark, as Trinity's power play was canceled out by a penalty on the Bantams. Just as the Mammoths' fifth player returned to the ice, Bea Flynn redirected a power-play shot into the net, giving Amherst a 3-1 lead with four minutes left to play.
The Bantams pushed for a comeback in the closing minutes, pulling goalie Madeline Carter for the extra skater. However, Amherst sealed the win with an empty-net goal by Ayla Abban, making it 4-1.
Trinity fell to Amherst 4-1, resulting in a 2-0 loss in the NESCAC series.
The Bantams will close out their regular season NESCAC series next Friday, February 21, at Wesleyan University. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
