PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The fourth-seeded Trinity College Men's Squash team will face the University of Virginia in the quarterfinals of the College Squash Association (CSA) Championship on Friday, March 7th, after earning a first-round bye.
This season, the Bantams have secured 12 wins and suffered 3 losses during the regular season. On February 9th, they claimed their 18th consecutive New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) title, defeating Bates College (9-0), Colby College (8-1), and Tufts University (8-1) in the Championship match.
Six Bantams earned spots in the CSA Individual Championships, held in New York City from January 25th to January 27th. Senior Mateo Restrepo, junior Benedek Takacs, junior Joachim Chuah, senior Ahmed Ismail, sophomore Dmytro Shcherbakov, and first-year Huzaifa Ibrahim represented Trinity. Restrepo, Takacs, and Chuah all competed in the Pool Trophy bracket, where the top 32 men in the nation competed. While Restrepo and Takacs were eliminated in the first round after tough battles, Chuah made a memorable run to the semifinals, which took place on a glass court in Grand Central Station. Chuah won the first game 11-8 but was ultimately defeated by UPenn's Omar Hafez in a reverse sweep.
Ismail competed in the Molloy North bracket, where he advanced to the semifinals before falling short. Shcherbakov suffered a first-round loss in the Molloy South bracket. However, first-year Ibrahim showcased his prowess, soaring to the championship of the Molloy East bracket and capturing his first CSA Individual Championship title.
Chuah has been a standout at the top of the Bantams' ladder, posting a 17-2 record this season and a 49-11 career record. Takacs has been strong at the number two spot, tallying 11 wins and 3 losses this season, with a career record of 41-12. Restrepo has shared the third spot with first-year Low Wa-Sern. Restrepo has a season record of 9-8 and a career mark of 41-19, while Wa-Sern has gone 7-4 in his rookie season.
The Bantams' only three losses this season came at the hands of the top three ranked teams: a 7-2 defeat to the University of Pennsylvania, followed by another 7-2 loss to Princeton University during the weekend of January 11th-12th. Trinity's third loss came to Yale University in a road match on February 5th.
The Bantams return to the CSA Championship determined to avenge their runner-up finish in the 2024 Potter Cup final, where they fell 7-1 to UPenn.
