Baseball Defeats Nichols, 7-3

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Baseball team grabbed a 7-3 non-conference victory over visiting Nichols College at Murren Family Field at DiBenedetto Stadium Tuesday afternoon. The Bantams improve to 12-13 on the season, while the Bison drop to 14-12 overall.

The Bantams grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Aidan Stern lead off the inning with a single, and then two batters later, Luis Saldivia belted a two-run home run inside the left field foul pole to put Trinity ahead.

Tyler Bernstein legged out an infield single to open the third inning, then stole second base and scored on an RBI single from Dylan Schnitzer to put the Bantams up 3-0. The Bison narrowed the gap to 3-1 in the top of the fifth as Taj Vera Cruz lifted an RBI double to deep centerfield.

Trinity responded in the bottom of the frame as William Sawyer laced an RBI single to rebuild a 4-1 lead. Nichols cut the gap back to two runs as Karl Miller scampered home on a wild pitch to make it a 4-2 game. Aidan Stevenson led off the bottom of the sixth with a triple to right-center, and then scored on an RBI sac fly from Saldivia to regain a 5-2 lead. Stevenson struck again in the sixth with a two-run single through the left side of the infield to extend the Bantams advantage to 7-2. The Bison notched their final run of the day with a solo home run from Liam Flynn in the top of the eighth.

Trinity starter Quintin Sotero (1-1) collected his first collegiate victory, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits with a strikeout in a career-high six innings of work.

The Bantams will be back on the diamond when they host Tufts University in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) weekend series against Tufts University at Murren Family Field at DiBenedetto on Friday and Saturday. First pitch for Friday's opener is slated for 3:00 p.m.
