HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Baseball team used an eighth-inning rally to defeat visiting Amherst College, 7-5, in a non-conference tilt at Murren Family Field at DiBenedetto Stadium Wednesday night. The Bantams rise to 15-14 overall, while the Mammoths drop to 14-13 on the season.
Tyler Bernstein going things started for Trinity, leading off the bottom of the first with a triple to the right field gap, and then scoring on a sacrifice fly from
Dylan Schnitzer to hand the Bantams the 1-0 lead.
Andrew Park followed with a double to centerfield, and then came home on a squeeze bunt from
Aidan Stern to make it a 2-0 game. The Mammoths narrowed the lead to 2-1 in the top of the second on an RBI single from Justin Orridge.
Bernstein and Schnitzer combined in the bottom of the third with Bernstein scoring on an RBI single from Schnitzer, and then Schnitzer crossing home on an RBI double from Park to extend the Trinity lead to 4-1.
The Mammoths rallied in the top of the fourth as Jack Boyle plated a pair of runs with an RBI single, followed by an RBI single from Aiden Dubetsky to even the game at 4-4. Amherst took the lead later in the frame as Boyle scampered home on a Trinity error, giving Amherst the 5-4 lead. The Bantams knotted the score in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI groundout from
Aidan Stevenson.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Bantams drew back-to-back walks from
William Sawyer and Stern to open the frame, and Trinity eventually loaded the bases when
Cole Mascolo delivered a clutch two-run single to centerfield to send the Bantams to the 7-5 victory.
Andrew Park tallied a team-high three hits, including a double, with an RBI and a stolen base. Mascolo and Schnitzer added two knocks and drove in a pair of runs, while Stern went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two stolen bases and an RBI. Andrew Perez (1-0) earned the win in relief, allowing two hits in two scoreless innings of relief. Trinity starter
Quintin Sotero went seven innings, giving up five runs, four earned, on eight hits.
The Bantams will be back on the diamond when they wrap up New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) with a rescheduled series at Bates College. The Bantams will battle the Bobcats in a single game Thursday, followed by a doubleheader on Friday. First pitch for Thursday's series opener is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
