HARTFORD, Conn. – Trinity College women's volleyball team claimed the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) victory Saturday afternoon over host Bates College in a five-set thriller.
Despite tightly contested first and fourth set, the Bantams rallied for a boisterous fifth set finish of 15-3 final to secure the win. The Bobcats lower to 10-4 overall while Trinity earned their second NESCAC victory of the season, moving to 2-5 in conference play, 11-5 overall.
How It Happened
- Set One – Bates College, 25-23: The tightly fought opening set saw the Bobcats top the Bantams narrowly with 17 kills, with only four attack errors for a .310 hitting percentage. Trinity hammered three service aces in the set but was short 4-to-1 in blocks, dropping the match point.
- Set Two – Trinity, 25-22: The stat columns mirrored each other, with both Trinity and Bates posting 12 kills, 2 service aces and 2 blocks each. The Bantams less errors, 5-to-8, with a .200 hitting percentage.
- Set Three – Trinity, 25-9: The Bobcats had a messy set with a -.115 team hitting percentage allowing the Bantams to peck their way to a dominant 25-9 win. Trinity kept their attacks clean, only logging 2 attack errors in the set. An 11-0 run, froze the Bobcats at 6 points while the Bantams stacked their points to a 10 point lead of 16-6.
- Set Four – Bates College, 25-19: The Bantams precision on the attacking end wavered in the fourth set, causing for 8 errors allowing the Bobcats to earn their second match point to force the match into a fifth set.
- Set Five – Trinity, 15-3: Three service aces by Catalina Hendricks, two attack errors by the Bobcats, two kills from Emma Ewart and a kill from Chloe Gentile built a 8-0 lead to begin the tie-breaker set. The Bantams defense stayed sharp, as they cleaned up the decisive set, allowing only three points from Bates.
Inside the Numbers
- First-Year Trinity Fore led Trinity with 13 kills, with a .48 hitting percentage while adding 4 block assists.
- Sophomore Emma Ewart, junior Annette Schlunk and senior Chloe Gentile all posted 11 kills, with 6 block assists combined. Gentile had three of the six, with 8 digs.
- Senior Scarlett Jago recorded a team-high 18 digs.
- Catalina Hendricks dished out a team-high 23 assists, while Maya Pace added 19.
- Trinity finished with 55 kills, 51 assists, 68 digs and 14 total blocks.
