Football Outlast Amherst In Undefeated Battle, 16-13

AMHERST, Mass. – The Trinity College Football team held off host Amherst College, 16-13, in a battle of undefeated teams at Lehrman Field Saturday afternoon. The Bantams improve to 8-0, while the Mammoths slide to 7-1.

What Happened:
  • On their opening drive of the game, the Mammoths drove down to the Bantams seven-yard line, but a crucial fourth-down stop by Luke Ventura halted Amherst's scoring bid.
  • The Bantams responded with a 10-play, 74-yard drive, capped by a 37-yard field goal from Luke Harvey to hand Trinity the 3-0 lead with 5:58 remaining in the first quarter.
  • The Amherst offense continued to move the ball, using a 16-play drive to inch towards the Bantams red zone. On second-and-eight from the Trinity 20-yard line, Shane Mosia intercepted a pass from Marek Hill in the endzone, keeping Amherst off the scoreboard for the second straight drive.
  • Trinity took nearly five minutes off the clock in the second quarter with a 12-play drive featuring 16 rushing yards from Josh Woodford, along with a 24-yard reception from Darison Hooper. The Bantams came up empty on back-to-back passes from the Amherst 23-yard line, leading to a 40-yard field goal from Harvey to push the lead to 6-0.
  • With 2:21 on the clock, Amherst lined up for a 30-yard field goal attempt, but the kick was blocked by Mosia and scooped up by Marshall Rice at the 27-yard line and returned 73 yards for the touchdown, extending the Trinity lead to 13-0. Max Wallace tacked on a 43-yard field goal in the waning minutes to give Trinity the 16-0 advantage at the half.
  • The Mammoths kicked off their comeback bid with a 15-play drive, punctuated by a one-yard touchdown run from Hill to trim the gap to 16-6 with 12:42 to play. Following a three-and-out by Trinity, Amherst rattled off an eight-play drive to move into scoring position, but an endzone pass from Hill was picked off by Bryce Ferrell to keep Amherst off the board.
  • With four minutes to play, Amherst moved the ball 66 yards on six plays, capped by a 28-yard touchdown pass from Hill to Christian Moore, closing the deficit to 16-13. The Mammoths were able to recover a muffed onside kick to attempt on final comeback bid. On third-and-30 in Amherst territory, Rice recovered a fumble from Jadon Davis to seal the 16-13 victory.
