#1 Men's Basketball Falls to #5 Mary Washington, 64-61, In NCAA Semifinals

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The top-ranked Trinity College Men's Basketball team suffered a 64-61 defeat to fifth-ranked University of Mary Washington in the 2026 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship Tournament Semifinals at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum Saturday night. The Bantams wrapped their campaign with a 29-3 mark, while the Eagles rise to 29-3.
 
What Happened:
  • The Eagles held serve in the early minutes of the first half, taking a 12-5 lead behind eight points from Jadon Burgess. The Bantams responded with an 8-3 run over the next four minutes to trim the deficit to 15-13 at the 11:41 mark.
  • The Bantams defense held the Eagles to two points over the next four minutes while using buckets from Paul Ippolito, Trevor McDonald and Jarrel Okorougo to capture a 22-17 lead at the under-eight media timeout.
  • Trinity seized control with an 11-4 run, featuring three-pointers from Ippolito and Henry Vetter, to extend the lead to 33-21 with 3:54 left in the first half. Jared Berry netted four straight points down the stretch to hand the Bantams a 37-26 lead at the half.
  • The Eagles quickly closed the gap to 37-30, but four points from Drew Lazarre maintained a 41-32 advantage with 15:48 to play. A jumper from Burgess capped a 9-0 run that evened the score at 41-41 with 11:32 remaining. A seven-point spurt from Jared Berry stifled the Mary Washington momentum as the Bantams regained a 51-46 advantage with less than eight minutes to play. A pair of inbound layups and a clutch assist from David Ayles helped keep Mary Washington at bay, 59-52, with 4:26 on the clock.
  • The Bantams struggled to find a shot down the stretch as the Eagles closed the game on a 12-2 run to steal the 64-61 victory.

  • Kye Robinson powered the Eagles with a game-high 21 points, nine rebounds and a game-high six assists. Randall tallied 14 points and five rebounds, and Burgess tacked on 12 points and four boards.
