Softball Splits at Tufts

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Trintiy College Softball team nearly swept Tufts University, taking the opening game, 7-5, before being edged out, 8-6, in the nightcap of a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) doubleheader at Spicer Field Saturday afternoon. The Bantams move to 12-10 on the season and 5-5 in conference, while the Jumbos hold a 20-6, 9-3 mark.
 
What Happened:
  • In game one, Trinity grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Abigail Alper raced home on a wild pitch. Trinity added to their lead in the third with an RBI single from Katie Ruffer, followed by an RBI sac fly from Isabella Calagna in the fifth to put the Bantams ahead 3-0.
  • The Jumbos chipped away at the deficit in the bottom of the fifth behind RBI knocks from Ella Malin and Lauryn Horita to close the gap to 3-2.
  • Trinity responded in the top of the sixth with a leadoff double from Heather Roth, and pinch-runner Annika Haley scored on a wild pitch two batted later. Alper belted a two-run single up the middle, followed by an RBI single from Goddard to regain a 7-2 advantage.
  • Tufts plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh, and threatened with two runners on, but Kaysen Shikar induced a game-ending flyout to take the 7-5 win.
  • In the nightcap, the Jumbos jumped to a 3-0 lead in the home half of the first inning on an RBI double from Haley Leimbach and an RBI groundout from Cat Kawabe.
  • The Bantams trimmed the gap over the next few innings with an RBI singles from Kellie Schroffner, Makenna True and Emily Goddard to knot the game at 3-3 in the fourth inning.
  • Tufts answered with three runs in the fourth and two runs in the fifth to push the Jumbos lead to 8-3. Trinity looked to rally in the sixth as Calagna and Mikayla O'Brien delivered RBI singles and Goddard scored on an error, setting the score at 8-6. Trinity put two runners on in the seventh, but were unable to bring anyone home.
 
Inside the Boxscore:
  • The Bantams logged seven runs on eight hits in the opener, along with six runs on 13 hits in game two. Tufts combined for 13 runs on 26 hits across the twinbill.
  • Ruffer tallied four hits with a run and an RBI, while Goddard added three hits, three runs scored and two RBIs.
  • Alper scored twice and drove in two runs, Calagna had two hits with two RBIs, and Schroffner recorded two hits, three runs scored and an RBI.
  • O'Brien, Roth, Makenna True, and Mikayla O'Brien each registered two hits.
  • Shikar (5-5) earned the victory in game one, tossing a complete game with five runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts. Erin Connor (4-3) took the loss in game two, surrendering six runs on 11 hits with a strikeout in three-plus innings pitched.
 
Up Next:
  • The Bantams will be back on the diamond when they host Mitchell College in a non-conference doubleheader at Trinity Softball Field on Wednesday, April 15 at 2:00 p.m.
  • All-time, Trinity holds a 6-0 record against the Mariners, dating back to their first meeting in 2022.
  • Last season, the Bantams posted a 6-0 victory over Mitchell in Hartford.
