Bantams Take Two Sending Mariners Back to Shore Empty-Handed

HARTFORD, Conn. – Trinity softball picked up two wins Wednesday afternoon over the visiting Mitchell College Mariners in a non-conference double dip on the Trinity College Softball Field. The Bantams improve 14-10 on the year, while the Mariners lower 14-15 in their season.

What Happened Game 1: Mitchell 1, Trinity 9 (6 innings)

  • A four-run inning to close the second lifted the Bantams ahead after a double from Heather Roth scored Makenna True. The bases became loaded after a single to shortstop by Lizzie Nelson and a bunt single from Mikayla O'Brien. Abby Alper earned first on balls, scoring Roth for the second run. A two-RBI single to center field by first-year Katie Ruffer brought Nelson and O'Brien home to make it 4–0.

  • Mitchell chalked up their lone run in the top of the fourth, as a single by Madison Cole sent Kaylee Drago across the plate.

  • In the bottom of the fifth, Mikayla O'Brien grounded out to second base, allowing Makenna True to score and Roth to advance to third. Sophomore Kellie Schroffner followed with a single down the left field line, sending Roth across the dish and extending the lead to 6–1.

  • After a pop-up and two groundouts closed the top of the sixth—holding Mitchell to one run—the Bantams added three more to trigger the eight-run rule. Ruffer doubled to left to score Goddard, followed by an error that allowed Makenna True to reach first and Ruffer to score for the eighth run. Roth then knocked a game-winning single to left-center, sending True home to secure the 9–1 win over Mitchell.
