Saturday Softball Sweep Over Mammoths

HARTFORD, Conn. – A weekend sweet over the visiting Amherst College Mammoths (8-18, 3-9 NESCAC) lifts the Trinity College Softball team to a 16-10 overall and a 7-5 New England Small College Athletic Conference mark. 

Trinity opened up a 7-5 win in game one, and closed game two 7-2 victory after a vocal fourth inning with 6 runs. 

Game 1: Trinity 7, Amherst 5

  • Three runs in the bottom of the second inning lifted the Bantams to a 3–0 lead in the opening game of the doubleheader. Lizzie Nelson reached first on a third baseman's error, allowing Isabella Calagna to score. Mikayla O'Brien followed with a single to shortstop to load the bases. With one out, Kellie Schroffner hit a grounder to third that resulted in a fielder's choice at home, but an overthrow by the third baseman allowed Heather Roth to score the second run of the inning. The third run came on a groundout to third by Abby Alper, which brought Nelson home.
  • The Mammoths cut the deficit to one run after a two run third inning. Rbi's from Lulu Leppard and Emma Nordstrom. 
  • Amherst Anna Promozic scored the tying run in the top of the fourth with a double down the left field line, 3-3.
  • After two quick outs to open up the second half of the fourth Mikayla O'Brien doubled to the warning track in left center on the second pitch. Schroffner followed with a double down the left line to push O'Brien to turn the corner on third and score the 4th run.
  • An RBI from O'Brien with a single up the middle in the bottom of the sixth pushed the Bantams lead to 5-3. Amherst relieved their pitcher with Abby Moravek moving Annie Katuska to the designated player to finish the game. Moravek struck out Schroffner, then allowed a single to the warning track in left center by Alper to score Nelson and O'Brien, 7-4.
  • Two singles and a double allowed for a fifth run to score for the Mammoths, 7-5. Two ground outs and a foul pop up down the third base line was caught in a diving play by Emily Goddard at third to capture the game one win for the Bantams.

Game 2: Trinity 7, Amherst 2

  • No action was seen in game two til the third when the teams traded runs, 1-1. Due to an error by Erin Connor after a bobbled grounder allowed for May Mishima to reach first and Julia O'Connell to score. The Bantams found their one with a warning track triple to right field, scoring Nelson from second. 
  • Amherst's Laura Daniels added their second run with a double deep down the left line, Heidi Li scored on the double, in an attempt to get Li out at home, Makenna True redirected the play at third throwing Daniels out from home to third. 
  • Six runs off, five hits, and a full line-up batted in the bottom of the fifth surged the Bantams ahead with a 7-2 lead. RBI's came from a sacrifice fly out to left center by O'Brien, a single down the left line by Alper, a Ruffer double to left center's warning track pulled in 2 runs, a double by Calagna and a double to left center by True. Two batters, True and Stadler faced the Mammoths relief arm, Abby Rebhan.

Up Next
The Bantams will be back in action with a four game NESCAC weekend, beginning Saturday with Trinity's Senior Day against the visiting Bowdoin College Polar Bears with games starting at 12PM and 2PM. Sunday will feature a double-header against the Colby College Mules for a 12PM and 2PM game on the Trinity Softball Field.
