HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Softball team took one of two games against visiting Colby College in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) twinbill at the Trinity Softball Field Sunday afternoon. The Mules rallied to a 6-4 win in the opener, while Trinity delivered a comeback in the finale, 4-3. The Bantams hold a 18-12 record with an 9-67 mark in conference, while the Mules are 23-8 overall, and 8-4 in the NESCAC.
What Happened:
- In the opener, the Bantams took advantage early as Colby starter KC Desarno struggled to find the strike zone, walking the first two batters. Katie Ruffer ripped an RBI double down the left field line, and then Emily Goddard raced home on a run-scoring knock from Makenna True. Avery Stadler drew a bases loaded walk to build a 3-0 advantage.
- Trinity tacked on another run in the bottom of the second as Alper laced a leadoff double, stole third and then scored on an error to extend the gap to 4-0.
- After being held off the board for the first five innings, the Mules began to rally with a three-run inning behind an RBI single from Caroline DeSimone, followed by a two-run knock from Victoria Ramirez.
- Down 4-3 with two outs in the seventh, Colby pulled of the comeback on an RBI single from Juliana Kiley and two-run single by Ramirez to pull ahead 6-4.
- After three scoreless innings opened the nightcap, Colby grabbed a 3-0 lead in the fourth with a runner scoring on an error, along with a two-run single from Carissa Cassidy.
- The Bantams looked to chip away at the deficit in the home half of the fourth, but Trinity left the bases loaded. In the bottom of the fifth, Goddard belted a two-out RBI single to trim the gap to 3-1.
- In the bottom of the seventh, Trinity mounted their comeback, beginning with a one-out double from Stadler. With runners on first and third, Schroffner laced an RBI single, and then stole second to put Bantams on second and third. Alper plated Mikayla O'Brien with a single to centerfield to knot the score at 3-3. On the following at-bat, Goddard lifted a sac fly to right field, and the Mules catcher was called for catcher's interference as Schroffner tried to score from third, giving Trinity the 4-3 victory.
Inside the Boxscore:
- Trinity registered four runs on five hits in game one, followed by a four-run, nine-hit performance in game two.
- Colby posted six runs on nine hits with two errors, and three runs on five hits with two errors.
- Alper tallied three hits with a double two runs scored, two stolen bases and an RBI, while True went 3-for-6 with an RBI.
- O'Brien had two hits and two runs scored, Ruffer added two hits with an RBIS and a run scored. Goddard logged two RBIs and scored.
- Erin Connor (8-3) collected the victory in the nightcap, allowing three runs, all unearned, on five hits and matched a career-high four strikeouts in a complete game performance. Kaysen Shikar (6-7) gave up six runs on eight hits with four strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work in the opener.
