Softball Drops Game One But Bounces Back in Game Two Against Bison

HARTFORD, Conn. – Bantams softball dropped a close first game to visiting Nichols College, 2-1, but Trinity's bats were swinging in game two with a 10-8 win over the Bison to split the double-header Wednesday afternoon. The Bantams move to 9-9, while the Bison rise 11-13 overall.

What Happened Game 1: Nichols 2, Trinity 1

  • Trinity got a head start in the contest with a triple to right center by Bantams lead off batter Abby Alper. A single from Katie Ruffer to left field scored  Alper for a 1-0 lead after the first.
  • Due to an error in the third on a single to right field allowed for the Bison to cross the dish with their first run of the evening.  
  • The top of the fourth saw the go-ahead run score for the Bison with a single to center field scored Mary Jo-Laudati from second marked the 2-1 lead change. 
  • Over the next three innings the Bantams totaled one hit and left 3 on base, surrendering the first game to the Bison, 2-1.

What Happened Game 2: Trinity 10, Nichols 8

  • Bats were swinging in game two, with three quick runs scored in the second inning by the Bison. Trinity responded with two of their own after Lizzie Nelson tripled to the warning track in left center, scoring Avery Stadler and Makenna True. The tying run came the next inning when Heather Roth sent a sacrifice fly to center field to score Emily Goddard, knotting the score 3-3.
  • Bantams relieved starting pitcher Erin Connor from the circle with Zofia Sargent at the top of the third.
  • Nichols added a fourth run in the fourth with a single from Ava Slavinsky who got thrown out at second, while Sydney Hicks made her way across the plate, 4-3.
  • In the bottom half of the fourth Nelson scored True off of a sacrifice fly to center field. The go ahead run came from Alper with a single to right center that sent home Stadler to snag the Bantams first lead of game two, 5-4. 
  • A single from Kyla Felicani to right field allowed the Bison to tie up the game, 5-5 with 2 outs in the inning. The Bantams were able to close the inning in the following at bat leaving one on base for the Bison.
  • The top of the sixth saw three more runs by Nichols. Due to a double with runners on third and first, allowed for the Bison to jump ahead 7-5. Jo-Laudati followed with a triple to right field to chalk up the Bisons 8th run. 
  • A vocal inning from the batters box for the Bantams came in the bottom half of the sixth as Trinity hammered 6 hits, scoring 5 runs. Goddard recorded the first RBI of the inning with a bases loaded ground out that score Annika Haley. Ruffer followed Goddard with a single through the left side that pushed both Alper and Nelson across the dish to tie the game 8-8. 
  • Isabella Calgna advanced Ruffer to second with a single up the middle to set up the Bantams in a good scoring position. With two outs, Heather Roth raked in the go-ahead run with a double to right field after the Bisons right fielder lost the ball in the sun to score Katie Ruffer
  • Nichols relieved Olviia Pedro from the lanes with Molly Medor. On a 1-1 count Makenna True to a whack at the ball for a single to right field that advanced Roth to third and scored Calagna, 10-8.
  • Trinity brought Erin Connor back within the pitching lanes at the top of the seventh. The first-year closed the game allowing one hit in the inning and two fly outs to capture the 10-8 win. 
  • Sargent was awarded the win in the meeting, while Connor earned the save in the non-conference clash with the Bison.

UP NEXT

The Bantams have a busy weekend with back-to-back NESCAC double-headers beginning with a Saturday, April 11th meeting with the Wesleyan University Cardinals starting at 12PM followed by a 2PM game. Sunday, April 12th will feature the Bantams visiting Tufts University with a 1PM and 3PM meeting with the Jumbos.
