Softball Takes Two at Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Trinity College Softball team swept a doubleheader at Wesleyan University in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) action at the Wesleyan Softball Field Saturday afternoon. The Bantams won game one, 9-3, and then rallied to a 6-4 victory in the nightcap. Trinity rises to 11-9 overall and 4-4 in the NESCAC, while the Cardinals dip to 14-11 and 4-6 in conference.
 
What Happened:
  • In the opening game, Trinity took a 1-0 lead in the first as Abigail Alper reached on a hit by pitch, stole second and then scored on an error. The Cardinals answered in the home half of the inning with an RBI single from Cat Palmer to make it 1-1.
  • The Bantams loaded the bases in the top of the second, and with two outs, Emily Goddard ripped a base-clearing double to centerfield, putting Trinity ahead 4-1.
  • After Trinity filled the bases again in the fourth with singles from Goddard and Isabella Calagna, Makenna True delivered an RBI single and Katie Ruffer scored on an error to pad the Bantams advantage to 6-1. Heather Roth followed with an RBI single, and Lizzie Nelson drew a bases loaded walk to extend the lead to 8-1.
  • Ruffer tacked on an RBI double in the fifth to give Trinity the 9-1 edge. Wesleyan added two runs in the bottom of the frame on RBI knocks from Rebecca Cassel-Siskind and Palmer to trim the deficit to 9-3. Kaysen Shikar scattered two hits with two strikeouts over the final two innings to secure the victory.
  • After four scoreless innings in game two, Wesleyan broke the contest open behind a grand slam from Molly Lennon to grab a 4-0 edge in the bottom of the fifth.
  • In the top of the sixth, Trinity began their comeback as Goddard ripped a leadoff double, and then cross home on an RBI single from True. Ruffer scored on an error, and then Mikayla O'Brien lined an RBI single to left field, close the gap to 4-3.
  • In the top of the seventh, Alper drew a leadoff walk, followed by a double from Goddard to put runners in scoring position. Alper raced home on a passed ball, and then Ruffer plated Goddard with an RBI single to right, putting the Bantams ahead 5-4. With two outs, Ruffer scored on another Cardinals error to push the advantage to 6-4. Erin Connor sat the Cardinals down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the frame to seal the 6-4 comeback win.
 
Inside the Boxscore:
  • Across the series, the Bantams registered 15 runs on 21 hits, while the Cardinals generated seven runs on 12 hits.
  • Goddard tallied four hits, including three doubles, with three runs scored and three RBIs. Ruffner went 4-for-9 with a double, three runs scored, two RBIs and a stolen base.
  • Roth and O'Brien both posted three hits with an RBI, while True drove in two runs on three hits with a run scored. Calagna added two hits and Alper scored four times in the victories.
  • Shikar (4-5) logged her sixth complete game of the season, allowing three runs on eight hits with five strikeouts. Connor (4-2) recorded her sixth complete game, surrendering four unearned runs on four hits with a strikeout.
 
Up Next:
  • The Bantams will be back on the diamond with a NESCAC road trip to Tuft University (19-5, 8-2 NESCAC) for a conference doubleheader at Spicer Field on Sunday, April 12. First pitch of game one is slated for 1:00 p.m.
  • Trinity halted a 13-game losing streak to the Jumbos with a series sweep in Medford during the 2024 season.
  • Last year, the Bantams dropped both games to Tufts, 9-0 & 9-3.
