John Michael Mason enters his ninth season as head coach of Trinity's men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field programs in 2026-27 and his fifth season as the College's director of cross country and track & field. A 2012 Trinity graduate and two-year captain of the Bantam men's track & field team, Mason enters his 15th season on the coaching staff of Trinity's men's and women's cross country and track & field programs. He was named associate head coach in 2016 and served as interim cross country and track & field head coach during the 2015 spring semester before becoming director of the programs in June of 2022. Mason was the 2021 USTFCCCA New England Men's Track and Field Coach of the Year and was previously nominated for USTFCCCA New England Region Women's Head Coach of the Year in 2019 and Assistant Coach of the Year in 2018.
Mason has guided numerous Bantams to NCAA Division III Championship meets and All-American honors, as well as All-NESCAC and USTFCCCA All-Region recognition. During his tenure as head coach, Trinity athletes have established numerous school records and earned national recognition across a wide range of track and field events. Most recently, Olivia Carney earned Second Team All-America honors in the 200 meters at the 2026 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships, while Jenna Najjar, Haley Bilodeau, Pete Passaro, and Donovan Koukal-Kollie earned All-NESCAC honors during the 2025-26 season. Mason's teams have also consistently competed among the top programs in the NESCAC and New England Division III.
As a Bantam student-athlete, Mason was a national qualifier who helped Trinity's distance medley relay finish 10th at the 2010 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships. A multiple NESCAC All-Academic honoree, he graduated from Trinity with Honors in General Scholarship and Optimus and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa after seven semesters. A native of Nahant, Mass., Mason founded and continues to direct the Trinity Film Festival, established in 2011. He earned a bachelor's degree in Classical Foundations of American Cultural History from Trinity and a master's degree with honors in American Studies from the College in 2014. He is a member of the Trinity Athletics Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee.
