Middletown, Conn. - Trinity College got a hat trick from junior
Britney McKenna (Rye, N.H.), all on redirections
in front of the Wesleyan net during power-play situations, as the
visiting Bantams opened the 2008-09 season with a 7-1 road victory
at Wesleyan University in New England Small College Athletic
Conference (NESCAC) women's ice hockey action this afternoon.
It was Trinity's third straight shutout win over Wesleyan and
fourth victory in a row over the Cardinals. Trinity has won
eight of the last nine meetings against Wesleyan.
The teams played even over the first 10 minutes of the contest
before McKenna posted her first goal of the game at the 10:19 mark,
redirecting a point shot by senior Kelley McCarthy
(Kingston, Mass.) while Trinity had the extra
skater. Sophomore Sarah Kohn (Winchester,
Mass.) added a second power-play goal for Trinity
with :36 left in the period as she received a pass from sophomore
Kim Weiss (Potomac, Md.) and tipped in
the puck from the right post.
Weiss began a four-goal Trinity run in the second period for a
6-0 lead when she picked up a loose puck at center ice and skated
in for a breakaway, beating Wesleyan senior netminder Rachel
Stemerman (36 saves) low to the glove side at 8:40. At 14:12,
McKenna put in her second goal of the contest on the power play
before sophomore Jill Roloff (West Seneca,
N.Y.) scored the first of her two goals in a
24-second span, each time assisted by freshman Hannah
Harvey (Silverthorne, Colo.).
Wesleyan broke the shutout of Bantam junior goalie
Isabel Iwachiw (New York, N.Y.), who totaled 14
saves, at 19:28 of the second period on junior Izzy Huston's shot
from in close on the left after a point shot from senior Julia
Cohen found its way to her through a maze of players in
front. McKenna polished off her hat trick with 2:39 to go in
the game, redirecting a point shot by freshman Domi Di Dia
(Studio City, Calif.) past Stemerman for the 7-1 final and
Trinity's fourth power-play marker.
