Worcester, Mass. - Freshman forward Nicola Garat
(Princeton, N.J.) scored the gamewinning goal as the
Division I College of the Holy Cross Crusader women's ice hockey
team edged the visiting Trinity College Bantams, 2-1, this evening
at the Hart Center. Trinity falls to 7-4-2 and extends its
winless streak to four games, while the Crusaders improve to
15-0-1.
Back and forth play, along with strong defense, held the first
period scoreless until Holy Cross junior forward Kathryn
O'Connor (Brookfield, Conn.) scored at the 11:54 mark to
give the Crusaders the 1-0 lead. O'Connor scored on a
pass in the slot from freshman defenseman Brooke Miller
(Falmourth, Mass.). The Crusaders held Trinity scoreless,
ending the first period up 1-0.
Trinity tied the game, 1-1, at the 7:57 mark in the second
period when sophomore forward Kim Weiss (Potomac,
Md.) skated the length of the ice off the breakaway
pass from sophomore forward Alexa Guglielmi (Rocky Hill,
Conn.) and converted the play. The Crusaders responded at
the 15:03 mark when Garat scored the power play goal and eventual
game-winner from in the crease. Garat's goal was assisted by junior
Katelyn Doherty (Toronto, Ontario) and sophomore
Emily Henry (Lumsden, Saskatchewan) and gave Holy
Cross the 2-1 lead.
The third period was controlled by tough defense as each
team managed just six shots on goal. Sophomore goaltender
Lindsay Atkinson (Westbank, British Columbia) made
the start in net for the Crusaders and totled 18 saves.
Trinity sophomore goalie Hilary Novik (Lakeville,
Conn.) stopped 23 shots.
