Hartford, Conn. - Freshman defender Dominique Di Dia
(Studio City, Calif.) tallied a goal and an assist,
including the gamewinner with 7:34 remaining in the third period,
to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 3-2 win over the visiting
Manhattanville College Valiants in women's ice hockey action this
evening at Williams Rink. Trinity improves to 9-5-2 with its
second win in a row, while the Valiants drop to 14-3 with their
first loss against a Division III team this season. The
Bantams avenge a 14-0 loss to Manhattanville in the last meeting
between the teams eight years ago.
Di Dia scored the clincher on a blistering slapshot from 40 feet
away in the center of the ice that sailed over Valiant junior
goalie Sophia Kokkonis' (East Meadow, N.Y.) left
shoulder. Sophomores Sarah Kohn (Winchester,
Mass.) and Kim Weiss (Potomac, Md.) each
provided her second assist of the game on the play.
Manhattanville had tied the game midway through the third frame
when junior forward Monique Rafferty (Clifton Park,
N.Y.) advanced the puck down the left side and snuck the
puck into the lower left corner of the Bantam net past junior
backstop Isabel Iwachiw (New York, N.Y.).
Trinity opened the scoring 8:34 into the contest and seven
seconds into its first power play on a hard shot by sophomore
blueliner Laura Komarek (Plymouth, Minn.), and
took a 2-0 lead early in the second stanza on a rebound by junior
forward Britney McKenna (Rye, N.H.). The
Valiants pulled within a goal on a scoring shot by senior forward
Alex Blackwell (Brewster, N.Y.). McKenna
joined Di Dia with a goal and an assist, Iwachis finished with 24
saves for Trinity. Kokkonis totaled 30 saves for
Manhattanville.
