Trinity Women's Ice Hockey Opens Season With Shutout Against Cortland State

Hartford, Conn. - Senior tri-captain goalkeeper Isabel Iwachiw (New York, N.Y.) needed to make just 12 saves to earn a shutout between the pipes, as the Trinity College Bantams posted a season-opening 2-0 win over the visiting SUNY Cortland Red Dragons in women's ice hockey action this evening at Williams Rink in the Koeppel Community Sports Center.  Cortland State drops to 3-4 with its third straight loss.  The teams will complete the two-game series in Hartford tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.

Senior tri-captain forward Emilie Wiggin (Belmont, Mass.) scored the first Bantam goal of the season, stuffing in a rebound of a shot from the right wing by senior defender Kaitlin McCarthy (Ipswich, Mass.) 7:45 into the contest.  Trinity sophomore forward Hannah Harvey (Silverthorne, Colo.) redirected a shot from just outside the left face-off circle by junior defender Laura Komarek (Plymouth, Minn.) that found its way through the legs of Cortland State freshman goalie Sarah Sitcov (Arlington, Va.) and into the net to give the Bantams a 2-0 lead early in the second frame during a power play.  Trinity held the Red Dragons without a shot for the first 16:05 of the game and to just three shots in the final period.  Sitcov made 28 saves for Cortland State.
