Danbury, Conn. - After nearly 75 minutes of scoreless play,
junior Steven Mayernick (Gladwyne,
Pa.) scored the first goal of the game and his
younger brother Dan added an insurance goal in the 86th minute to
lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to a 2-0 victory over
Western Connecticut State University Colonials in men's soccer
action this evening. Trinity, ranked No. 3 in New England and
No. 22 in the nation, improve to 5-0-1 with its third straight win,
while the Colonials fall to 2-6.
Steven Mayernick was set up with a pass from junior midfielder
Peter Marlette (Buffalo, N.Y.) just outside the
top of the box and was able to turn and deposit the ball in the
back of the net. Marlette set up Dan Mayernick's
(Gladwyne, Pa.) marker when he led the sophomore
through the right side of the box and a clear attempt.
Trinity keeper Grant Schonberg (Mendham, N.J.)
made six saves to preserve his fourth shutout of the season.
Angelo Tsingerliotis (Norwalk, Conn.) made three
saves for the Colonials over the first 45 minutes. He yielded the
duties between the pipes to Keith Guillette (Seymour,
Conn.) for the second stanza. Guillette, who has been
sidelined for the past three games with a foot injury, made one
save. The Colonials held a 15-12 advantage in shots.
