Boston, Mass. - Senior goaltender Isabel Iwachiw (New
York, N.Y.) made 24 saves and earned a shutout to lead the
Trinity College Bantams to a 3-0 win over the Bowdoin College Polar
Bears in the opening round of the Codfish Bowl Women's Ice Hockey
Tournament at the University of Massachusetts-Boston this
afternoon. Trinity, ranked No. 10 in the nation, improves to
6-1-2 with its third straight victory and advances to the finals
against the host Mass.-Boston Beacons, which downed the No.
6-ranked Lake Forest College Foresters, 3-1, this
afternoon, tomorrow at 3 p.m. The Bantams will be
competing for their third straight Codfish Bowl title, and Iwachiw
is a two-time, all-tournament selection and the 2008 Codfish Bowl
MVP. Bowdoin falls to 4-3-1 with its first loss in five games
and will play in the consolation game tomorrow at noon.
Iwachiw turned away 12 shots in the second period, while the
Bantams scored twice in the same frame to take a 2-0 lead into the
third. Sophomore forward Brigitte Cellino (Buffalo,
N.Y.) scored the gamewinner from junior defender
Laura Komarek (Plymouth, Minn.) and junior forward
Kim Weiss (Bethesda, Md.) on a power play 6:49
into the second. Junior forward Jill Roloff (West
Seneca, N.Y.) added a second Bantam goal with 23 seconds
left before the second break, and sophomore forward Celia
Colman-McGaw (Manchester, Conn.) tallied early in the
third frame. Sophomore goaltender Sage Santangelo
(Laporte, Colo.) had 26 saves for the Polar Bears.
