Hartford, Conn. – Junior
Dan Mayernick (Gladwyne, Pa.) scored the lone goal
of the game to give the Trinity College Bantams a 1-0 win over the
Western Connecticut State University Colonials in men's
soccer action this afternoon on Campus Field. The Bantams
improve to 3-3 overall, while the Colonials fall to 1-5-1
overall.
With just under 20 minutes remaining in the
first half, Mayernick scored his second goal in as many games,
giving Trinity all the offense they would need on the
afternoon. Western Connecticut made it interesting in the
second half, with consecutive scoring opportunities on hard shots
by junior Matthew Hoffman (Bridgeport, Conn.), but
Trinity junior goalkeeper Grant Schonberg (Mendham,
N.J.) came up with clutch stops on both to preserve the
Trinity lead, which would hold until the final whistle.
Schonberg finished the game with two saves,
which was enough for his second shutout of the season and the ninth
of his career, while first-year Jack Holub (Sherman,
Conn.) made 10 saves for the Colonials.
Trinity will visit NESCAC rival Wesleyan on
Sat., Oct. 2 at 2:30 p.m. and Westfield State on Tues., Oct. 5 at
7:00 p.m.
