Trinity Women's Ice Hockey Takes Care Of Amherst On The Road

Box Score

Amherst, Mass. – Junior forward Abby Ostrom (Carlisle, Mass.) tallied the game-winning goal at the 13:12 mark of the second period to lift the visiting Trinity College Bantams to an eventual 4-2 win over the Amherst College Lord Jeffs in non-conference women's ice hockey action this evening at Orr Rink.  Ostrom added an assist as she registered her first points of the season, helping Trinity improve to 3-1-2, while Amherst fell to 3-4.

First-year forward Cheeky Herr (Princeton, N.J.) and senior defender Rebecca Rosen (Syosset, N.Y.) staked Trinity to a 2-0 lead before Erin Martin got Amherst on the board late in the first period, and Geneva Lloyd tied the game 11 seconds prior to Ostrom's tally. Unable to crack the 3-2 deficit, the Jeffs pulled goalie Kasia Henley in the final minute and Trinity sophomore Lucy Robinson (Toronto, Ontario) sent the puck into an open net.

"I thought we showed huge resilience and had some monumental plays by key players in the last minute to get the win," said Head Coach Carson Duggan.  "That was an all-around team win and something we can certainly build on moving forward."

Trinity jumped ahead at the 7:55 mark in the first period, when Herr collected a pass from Ostrom in her own half of the ice then carried across the Amherst blue line for a breakaway shot. While starting Amherst goalie Kerri Stuart  was able to deflect her initial attempt, Herr flipped the rebound in for her first collegiate goal.  Things got even better for the Bantams late in the period, when Rosen emerged victorious from a scrum in front of the Amherst net, jamming in her first of the season with sophomores Lily Gacicia and Lauren Fitzgerald earning assists.  The Jeffs quickly rebounded, however, cutting the lead in half just 46 seconds later when Erin Martin sent in a close-range look.

Much of the second period passed quietly with Henley taking over in net for Amherst, but things got exciting in a hurry in the second half of the frame, beginning with Lloyd's goal off the pipes past Trinity junor goaltender Alexa Pujol (New Canaan, Conn.) to even the score at 2.  Ostrom quickly attacked the Amherst net and finished an unassisted goal from close range to put the visitors back on top, 3-2. With Pujol making several nice saves for the Bantams, the Jeffs could not find the equalizer before the second intermission, despite a 10-6 edge in shots over the period.

Neither team could cash in on power plays to start the third, and Henley kept the Jeffs within one with a nice save off Hillary McNamara (Milton, Mass.) look six minutes in. Pujol made four late saves for the Bantams including a pair of stops in the final minute after the Jeffs pulled Henley.  After a blocked Lloyd attempt caromed out to the middle, Robinson sent in the final goal on the empty net with just seven seconds remaining.
