Middletown, Conn. - Juniors Dan Carpenter (Wayzata, Minn.)
and Musyoka Mbithi (Orange, N.J.) each won in singles and
doubles to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to a 5-4
victory over the Wesleyan University Cardinals in New England Small
College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's tennis action this
afternoon. Trinity, ranked No. 7 in the Northeast, improves
to 7-3 overall and 3-1 in the NESCAC with its fourth win in a row,
while the Cardinals, ranked No. 9 in the region, fall to 8-4
overall and 3-3 in the league.
Carpenter and junior David Myers (Winnetka, Ill.) won, 8-4, at
No. 1 doubles, while Mbithi and sophomore Ford Traff (Wayzata,
Minn.) won, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles for a 2-1 Bantam lead entering
singles play. Carpenter won two close sets, 7-6, and, 7-5,
over Jake Roberts at the top of the singles ladder, but the
Cardinals earned points in three singles flights. Mbithi won,
6-3, in his opening set and recovered from a 6-4 setback in the
second to win the third, 6-2, at No. 4 singles. Trinity
freshman No. 3 Rutendo Matingo (Weston, Mass.) rallied back from a
6-4 loss in his first set to take the last two, 6-1, and, 7-5.
