Hartford, Conn. – The Trinity College women's tennis team will be the No. 6 seed in the upcoming New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship this weekend at Bowdoin. The Bantams, coached by Wendy Bartlett, finished the regular season with a 9-6 overall record and a 3-4 mark in league tilts. Most recently, Trinity snapped its three-match losing streak with a 9-0 win against Bates in the regular-season finale. The shutout victory was the second for the Bantams in conference play this season and the team is currently ranked No. 15 in the nation and No. 7 in the Northeast.
Trinity will square off with No. 3-seeded Bowdoin (13-5, 6-2 NESCAC) Friday morning at 8:00 a.m. in the first round. In the tournament for the sixth consecutive year, the Bantams grabbed the last spot in this year's championship for the third straight season. Trinity registered a 6-3 win against Wesleyan on April 3, a 9-0 win against Connecticut College on April 9, and a 9-0 win against Bates in the last match of the regular season. On March 19, the Polar Bears defeated the Bantams by the score of 8-1 in California. Last year, Bowdoin knocked off Trinity, 5-0, in the first round.
The Bantams have been strong in singles play this year, going 53-37 in dual matches. Leading the way is senior Senzo Mavune-Maphisa (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) with a team-high 12 wins. Sophomore Morgan Feldman (Upper Brookville, N.Y.), who is ranked No. 13 in the region, is second on the with 11 wins, while sophomore No. 1 Melita Ferjanic (Samobor, Croatia) has posted 10 victories and is ranked No. 11 in the region. Senior tri-captains Caroline Gagne (Excelsior, Minn.) and Elizabeth Gerber (Bethesda, Md.) have added eight and seven wins, respectively. In doubles play, Feldman and Ferjanic have notched eight triumphs, while Gagne and Gerber have recorded six wins.
