Bantams Blank Colby, 2-0, for First NESCAC Win

Box Score

Hartford, Conn. – The Trinity College men's soccer team won its first New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) game of the season, topping Colby, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at Campus Field. The Bantams held their opponents scoreless for the second straight game to improve to 4-1-1 on the year and 1-1-1 in league tilts, while the Mules suffered their third conference loss in a row to fall to 3-3 overall and 0-3 in NESCAC play.

Trinity first-year Will Gittings (Greenwich, Conn.) netted his first collegiate tally on a header off a corner from sophomore Mike Cooke (Boston, Mass.) in the 39th minute for the game winner. Cooke's first attempt at the corner was stopped by the referee as players from both Trinity and Colby were given yellow cards and Gittings made the most of the second chance burying the past Mules goalkeeper Peter Quayle. In the second half, sophomore Cody Savonen (Orleans, Mass.) found senior co-captain Tim Shea (Somerset, Mass.) in the 88th minute to put the game out of reach. Savonen has now recorded a point in four of six contests this season and leads the team in points with nine (4g, 1a). Shea's tally was his third of the season and he has now found the back of the net in consecutive home games. Click here to watch Shea's game clinching goal.

Trinity senior goalkeeper Jason Katz (Middleton, Mass.) recorded his first shutout of the season, stopping all six shots he faced, while Quayle made six saves in a losing effort for the Mules.

The Mules outshout the Bantams, 13-11, and Colby took 10 corners to Trinity's two.

In each of its four wins this season, Trinity has held the opposition scoreless.

Trinity returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 27, with a conference clash with Bates at home beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Bantams are a perfect 2-0 at home this year and have played to scoreless draws against the Bobcats in their last two meetings.
