Savonen Scores Game Winner in Wild Double Overtime Thriller against Bowdoin

Box Score

Hartford, Conn. - The Trinity College men's soccer team knocked off New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) rival Bowdoin, 2-1, on Saturday thanks to a game winning goal by junior forward Cody Savonen (Orleans, Mass.) after a wild finish to both regulation and overtime. Trinity improves to 5-4-2 on the year, 2-4-1 in conference play, while Bowdoin drops to 4-3-2 on the season.

The first half was evenly played as only one shot was put on goal by either team and ended with the score knotted up at zero's a piece. The second half, however, was a much different story.

Trinity got on the scoreboard first at the 54 minute mark as senior co-captain Tobias Gimand (Fairfield, Conn.) set up sophomore Sam Milbury (Peabody, Mass.) with a nice pass that Milbury blasted into the goal from outside the box, hitting the top crossbar and going in.

The Bantams' defense held stout for the majority of the game until a controversial no-call set up a Polar Bear corner with less than a minute to play in regulation. What seemed to be a blatant hand ball by Bowdoin in Trinity's goalie box was not called, and instead went out of bounds off of the Bantams. Bowdoin capitalized on the corner from Ethan Ellsworth (Greenlawn, N.Y.) as Nabil Odulate (Ellicott City, Md.) headed it into the back of the net to tie the game with just 13 seconds to play. After some extracurricular activities from both teams after the goal, the clock struck zeroes and the teams headed to overtime.

The first overtime period went without hazard for either team as Trinity was the only team to get a shot off in the first ten minutes of bonus soccer.

The second overtime looked like it was going to be the same, however with time running out, the Bantams were able to muster one last scoring opportunity and they took advantage. Off of a Bowdoin turnover in the Trinity defensive half, Gimand was able to control the ball and took a couple strides down field before leading Savonen with a beautiful through ball towards Bowdoin's goal. Savonen then beat two defenders and put it past Polar Bear goalie Stevie Van Siclen (Carlisle, Mass.) to win the game for Trinity in the 109th minute.

Bantam goalkeeper Domenic Quade (Norwood, Mass.) continued his strong play between the pipes for Trinity and improved to 3-1 on the year after stopping seven shots on the afternoon. Trinity returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 13, as they travel to Western Connecticut State. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
