Hartford, Conn. - The Trinity College Bantams rallied back from a 3-0 deficit after doubles play to record a 5-4 triumph over the visiting Tufts University Jumbos in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's tennis action this afternoon. In a six-plus hour match indoors, the No. 22-ranked Bantams improve to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the NESCAC with their third victory in a row, while the No. 23-ranked Jumbos fall to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in the league with their third consecutive setback.
Four Bantams won singles matches in straight sets, and senior captain Musyoka Mbithi (Roxbury, N.J.) came back from a 7-6 loss in his first set to defeat Rob Jacobson, 6-1, and, 6-3, in the next two sets. Fellow Trinity senior captains Dan Carpenter (Wayzata, Minn.), Ilya Levin (Wellesley, Mass.), and junior Ford Traff (Wayzata, Minn.) at No. 1, No. 5, and No. 4 singles by a combined score of 36-6, and senior captain Ned Mandel (Bethesda, Md.) added a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 6 for the Bantams. Tufts won three closely-contested doubles matches, 8-4, at No. 1, 9-8, at No. 2, and, 8-6, at No. 3 for a 3-0 lead, and led, 4-1, after Rohan Gupte earned the lone Jumbo singles point.
