Middlebury, Vt. – The No. 6 seed Trinity College women's tennis team fell to third-seeded Amherst, 5-0, on Friday afternoon at Proctor Courts at Middlebury College in the opening round of the 2015 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Women's Tennis Championship.
With the win, the Jeffs improve to 12-3 on the year and will advance to face host and No. 2 seed Middlebury tomorrow afternoon for a berth in the NESCAC Championship. With the loss, the Bantams move to 6-9 overall as they were eliminated in the first round of the post-season tournament for the second straight season.
Amherst jumped out quickly with three convincing wins in doubles play. Sarah Monteagudo and Safi Aly were 8-0 winners over first-year Ania Aliev (Needham, Mass.) and senior Carolyn Zimmer (Vero Beach, Fla.) in the No. 3 spot. The top slot saw Vicki Ip and Sue Ghosh defeat juniors Melita Ferjanic (Samobor, Croatia) and Morgan Feldman (Upper Bookville, N.Y.), 8-2. Jackie Calla and Maddy Sung followed at No. 2, defeating first-years Vanja Babunski (Belgrade, Serbia) and Emily Cutis (Milton, Mass.), 8-4, for the 3-0 lead.
In singles action, the Jeffs won a pair of matches, 6-0, 6-0, to clinch the victory. Monteagudo was first off the court at No. 4 over Aliev, while Claire Carpenter clinched the match with a win at No. 6 over Curtis.
