Trinity Volleyball Drops NESCAC Matchup with Tufts

Hartford, Conn. - The Trinity College Bantams team fell, 3-0, to the Tufts University Jumbos on Saturday afternoon in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) volleyball action inside of Oosting Gymnasium in Hartford. Trinity, which fell by set scores of 25-15, 25-15, and 25-23, falls to 4-8 overall and 0-5 in conference play while the Jumbos improve to 10-1 on the year and 5-0 in NESCAC action.

Tufts finished the afternoon with a .270 hitting percentage and served up six aces as well. Brigid Bell (Granite Bay, Calif.) tallied seven kills on the day, as did Jumbo captain Elizabeth Ahrens (Richmond, Va.). Rachel Furash (Westlake Village, Calif.) and Angela Yu (Austin, Texas) combined to dish out the Jumbos 25 helpers on the day as Furash finished with 14 assists and Yu with 11. Tufts took advantage of seven Bantam errors to win the first set, 25-15, despite a .167 team hitting percentage. The Jumbos came back strong in the second set, committing just one error and tallying 12 kills to win, 25-15, again. Trinity kept it close in the third set, however the visitors were able to pull away and clinch the match with the 25-23 set victory.

For Trinity, sophomore Rachel Underwood (Danville, Calif.) continued her strong play as she led the team with eight kills and a .333 hitting clip. Senior tri-captain Randi Whitham (Weymouth, Mass.) led all players with 23 assists while first-year Colette Scheffers (Flossmoor, Ill.) paced the Bantams with nine digs to go along with six kills of her own. 

Trinity returns to action on Tuesday, October 4, as they host St. Joseph University on Dig Pink night. Dig Pink is a fundraising initiative for breast cancer awareness and as such, the Bantams will don pink uniforms to show their support and fans are asked to wear pink to the game and "pink out" the gym. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
