Trinity Men's Soccer Beaten By Tufts

Box Score

Hartford, Conn. – Senior forward Gaston Becherano (Hollywood, Fla.) scored both goals to lead the visiting Tufts University Jumbos to a 2-0 victory over the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's soccer action this afternoon.  Trinity falls to 6-5-2 overall and 3-5-1 in the NESCAC and is 0-1-2 in three games over the last five days.  Tufts, ranked No. 9 in New England, improves to 7-3-2 overall and 5-1-2 in the league with its third consecutive victory, while extending its unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1).

Becherano scored his first goal in the 26th minute, beating Trinity senior goalie Domenic Quade (Norwood, Mass.) to a high-bouncing ball just inside the box and touching it over the keeper's head with an assist credited to freshman Gavin Tasker (Concord, Mass.).  The Jumbos nearly added to their lead in the first save, but Quade denied Tasker on back-to-back shots with diving efforts on both stops in the 37th minute.  Trinity's closest chance of the first half, came at the midpoint when Tufts senior Scott Greenwood (Weymouth, Mass.) stopped Bantam senior Andrew Bruno (Andover, Mass.) for one of his two saves before intermission.

Trinity had several near misses in the second half, beginning with a shot just wide left from the top of the box by sophomore midfielder Sam Hoffman (Greenwich, Conn.) 15 minutes after the break.  Bantam senior captain midfielder Tobias Gimand (Fairfield, Conn.) just missed from the right flank in the 71st minute and shot just high after a perfect give-and-go from classmate Fernando Cuervo-Torello (Arlington, Mass.) off a direct kick just outside the box with 1:25 left in the game.

Becherano gave Tufts an insurance goal at the 73:45 mark, converting on a nifty touch pass in front of the Trinity goal by rookie Zachary Trevorrow (Honolulu, Hawaii).  Quade made several more spectacular stops in the second half to finish with nine saves, while Greenwood had five stops for Tufts.  The Jumbos outshot the Bantams, 16-10, and took the only two corner kicks of the game.
