Box Score 2 Hartford, Conn. -The Trinity College volleyball team moved to 1-2 on the year after getting swept by Clark University, and sweeping Westfield State University on the final day of the Trinity Volleyball Invitational, hosted by the Bantams. Trinity lost to Clark, 3-0, in the 10 a.m. game before finishing on a high-note with a 3-0 win over the Owls in the day's final game.
In the team's first game, the Cougars came out strong in the first set as they took a 19-8 lead and did not look back, winning the set by a 25-18 clip. Trinity fell behind early once again in the second set but battled back to cut deficit to one, 15-14. The game remained close as sophomore Rachel Underwood (Danville, Calif.) crushed a kill to make it an 18-17 game in favor of Clark, as the Cougars called a timeout to try and slow Trinity's momentum. Clark responded out of the timeout with three straight points as they went on to win, 25-20. Trinity found themselves ahead in the third set, 19-17, after a kill from junior Claudia Varner (Port Washington, N.Y.), however the Bantams offense stalled and the Cougars came away with a 25-21 set win thanks to a kill by junior Maria Ramos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico). Freshman Colette Scheffers (Flossmoor, Ill.) led Trinity's offense with 10 kills and five aces while Ramos led all players with 11 kills to go along with 15 digs.
Against Westfield State, the Owls found themselves in front, 11-10, in set one as Trinity called a timeout to try and regroup. The Bantams went on an 8-1 run out of the stop, forcing the Owls to take a timeout of their own. Westfield State cut it to three at 20-17 but the Bantams prevailed, 25-19, on a set clinching kill by senior tri-captain Rachel Hughes (Boxborough, Mass.). Westfield State looked like they were going to run away with the second set as they jumped out to a 9-2 lead but the Bantams battled back. Back-to-back aces by Varner tied the game at 24, before a kill from freshman Wyllie Boughton (Andover, Mass.) and an unforced Owl error gave Trinity a 26-25 lead. Freshman Carter Stancil (Orem, Utah) clinched the set with a kill to put the Bantams up 2-0 in the match. Set three was all Trinity as they earned the 3-0 sweep for their first win of the season. Underwood and Scheffers combined for 18 kills while senior tri-captain Randi Whitham (Weymouth, Mass.) led all players with 20 assists to go along with 3 aces.
Clark beat Eastern Connecticut State, 3-1, despite dropping the first set in the first game of the day. Ramos led the Cougars once again while Adrianna Mihalek (Woodbury, Conn.) led the Warriors with 11 kills and three aces. The Warriors later bounced back and knocked off Westfield State in the 2 p.m. game.
