Box Score Hartford, Conn. - Colby College junior Grady Jendzejec (Chappaqua, N.Y.) scored a header off of a throw in near Trinity's defensive third with 47 seconds remaining in the second overtime period to lift the Mules past the Trinity College men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon in Hartford. Colby improves to 2-3-1 overall and 1-1-1 in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) action while the Bantams fall to 2-4 on the year and 0-4 in league play.
Colby struck first in the 21st minute of the first half thanks to a goal by Aidan Black (Cumberland Center, Maine) that he punched over the outstretched hand of Trinity senior goalie Domenic Quade (Norwood, Mass.) and into net. After a handful of chances, the Bantams finally answered as senior forward Fernando Cuervo-Torrello (Arlington, Mass.) controlled the ball near the Colby box and found senior captain Tobias Gimand (Copenhagen, Denmark) who booted the ball past Mule keeper Avery Gibson (Natick, Mass.) into the bottom right corner of the net. The score remained tied, 1-1, as the team's broke for intermission.
Despite outshooting Colby, 9-1, in the second half, Trinity could not get anything past Gibson to take a lead. Senior captain Cody Savonen (Orleans, Mass.) had two good looks at net in the 74th and 75th minute, however Gibson held his ground and turned aside both shots. Trinity's defense played well for their part in the half as the Mules had limited scoring opportunities, allowing the Bantams to control possession for much of the half.
The first overtime period came and went incident free as the lone scoring threats were a Trinity corner kick and a shot from Savonen that was saved by Gibson and a shot by Bantam freshman Henry Farr (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.) that sailed the net. The second extra session looked like it was heading for a similar fate before Jendzejec put his head on a ball and got enough on it to beat Quade and send Colby home the winners, 2-1.
The Bantams return to action on Saturday, October 1, for a NESCAC matchup with Bates, at home. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m.
