Trinity Men's Soccer Loses At Bowdoin

Box Score

Brunswick, Maine - The visiting Trinity College Bantams lost, 3-1, against the Bowdoin College Polar Bears in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's soccer action this afternoon at Pickard Field.  Trinity drops to 2-8 overall and 0-7 in the NESCAC with its third setback in a row, while the Polar Bears improve to 6-3 overall and 2-2 in the league with their fourth victory in a row.  Sophomore midfielder Alistair Matule (Charlestown, Mass.) scored for Trinity with an assist provided by classmate Henry Belt (Brookline, Mass.).  The Bantams host Western Connecticut on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in their next game, while the Polar Bears are at NESCAC rival Colby tomorrow at 3 p.m.

The Polar Bears led, 1-0, after a goal by Moctar Niang off a rebound in the fifth minute, but Matule tied it up at 1-1 in the 24th minute of play when he converted on a through ball from Belt with a finish into the bottom left corner.  Drake Byrd nearly regained the lead for Bowdoin in the 52nd minute, launching a shot from outside the box, but Bantam rookie goalie Everett Lyons (Soithport, Conn.) tipped it over the crossbar.  Byrd successfully converted 17 minutes later on a breakaway, beating his defender and rounding Lyons before shooting into the top left corner.  Jack Shultz pushed the lead to 3-1 with 12 minutes to play with a left-footed shot from outside the box through traffic to the left post.  Lyons ended the day with seven saves and Bowdoin's Chris Kingston made three stops.  The Polar Bears held a 21-9 shot advantage and 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
