Men's Soccer Comes Away With 2-1 Overtime Thriller in Season Opener

Box Score

Beverly, Mass. - Junior Max Cottrell (Dover, Mass.) scored the equalizer in the 79th minute to tie things at 1-1 before classmate Henry Farr (Philadelphia, Pa.) played the hero, finding the back of the net just over four minutes into overtime to lift the Trinity College men's soccer team to a thrilling, 2-1 victory over the Endicott College Gulls at Hempstead Stadium on Wednesday night. The Bantams win their season opener to improve to 1-0 on the year while the Gulls fall to 0-4 overall.

Endicott struck first in the 10th minute of the contest when Max Robbins (Longmeadow, Mass.) sent a pass to Bobby Ivatts (Walpole, Mass.), who then crossed to Evan Couchot (Mason, Ohio). Couchot was able to gather the ball in front of the net and shoot past Trinity sophomore goalie Andrew Clark (Short Hills, N.J.) for the 1-0 lead. The goal was Clark's lone blemish of an otherwise superb evening, as the New Jersey native finished the day with six saves in his first collegiate start.

Endicott continued to control play for the rest of the first half and start of the second, but the Bantams were able to tie the game at 1-1 on Cottrell's first tally of the season at the 78:31 mark. Cottrell picked up the ball off a deflection in front of the Endicott net and sent a shot into the lower right hand corner of the goal past goalie Jack Bacon (Lincoln, R.I.) for the equalizer.

Both teams continued to look for the game-winner but neither could convert in regulation. After four minutes of the overtime session without a shot from either side, Farr displayed great touch in front of the box, off an assist from sophomore John Mullin (Falmouth, Maine), before firing the ball into the lower back corner of the net to lift the Bantams to the opening night victory.

Trinity returns to the pitch on Saturday for a 2 p.m. New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) matchup at Williams.
