Trinity Field Hockey Blanks New England

HARTFORD, Conn. - Senior capytain Caelin Flaherty (Upton, Mass.) scored twice to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 3-0 victory over the visiting University of New England Nor'easters in field hockey action this afternoon on Sheppard Field.  Trinity, ranked No. 7 in the nation, improves to 10-3, while New England falls to 9-5.  Trinity will host top-ranked Middlebury in its next game on Saturday, October 23 at 11 a.m.  The Nor'easters entertain No. 3-ranked Tufts on Thursday at 6 p.m.

After several near misses, including a shot off the post by sophomore Katrina Winfield (Wilmington, Del), Trinity finally broke through and scored on a perfectly-executed penalty corner with 1:02 left in the first quarter.  Winfield inserted the ball, sophomore Kylie Tierney (Garden City, N.Y.) stopped it, and senior captain Christine Taylor (Westport, Conn.) smacked it in from the top of the circle.  The second period was uneventful with Trinity managing the only shot-on-goal, and the Bantams led, 1-0, at the break.

Trinity rookie Izzy Deveney (Westport, Conn.) sent the ball in to the circle from deep in the upper left corner to feed Flaherty, who one-touched the ball into the cage for the game's second goal just 1:26 into the third stanza. Bantam sophomore goalkeeper Olivia McMichael (Glenside, Pa.) made three of four saves in a 23-second span, including two on New England shots by Jillian Lachapelle later in the third, to keep the Nor-easters off the board, and Flaherty put the nail in the visitors' coffin with a fantastic individual move on the right for the game's final tally.  The Bantams peppered New England goalie Lyndsay Pych with shots in the final quarter, but Pych came up with seven of her nine stops to keep the score at 3-0.
