Trinity Football Produces Strong Second Half to Prevail at Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine – Despite trailing by its largest deficit of the season at halftime, the Trinity College football team put up 35 unanswered second-half points to down Colby College, 35-12 on the road for its sixth-straight win of 2021. Saturday's loss drops Colby to 2-4 on the year. The 6-0 Bantams travel to Williams College next Saturday to take on the unbeaten Ephs for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.

Colby's second possession of the afternoon resulted in six points when Keon Smart carried the ball in from 12-yards out following an 11-play Mules drive. The Bantams struggled to get anything going offensively in the first half, punting the ball three times and also handing the football over to Colby on a fumble.

With the stingy Colby defense giving the ball back to its offense for the fourth straight Trinity possession, Smart extended his team's lead to two scores, this time rushing in from two yards out. After missing on his first extra-point attempt of the day, Moises Celaya's kick was blocked by junior Justin O'Neil-Riley. Heading into the locker rooms at the half, the Bantams trailed by two scores for the first time all season at 12-0.

Things began to click for Trinity in the second half when quarterback Spencer Fetter capped off a nine-play drive on a one-yard touchdown pass to senior tight end Jack Barrett. On the first play from scrimmage following the touchdown, sophomore Luca de Lancellotti forced and recovered a fumble that the Bantams would capitalize on as classmate William Kirby's three-yard rushing score put the Bantams on top 14-12. Fetter would later connect with first-year wide receiver Mathew Laughlin on a 40-yard touchdown strike and again with Barrett as the play-action pass made the job an easy three-yard pitch and catch for a 28-12 lead. With 57 seconds to go, Fetter would add his fourth touchdown pass of the day to senior Jonathan Girard

Fetter completed 27 of 33 passes for 320 yards and four touchdowns. Kirby eclipsed 100 yards on the ground, netting 139 and a score on 24 carries. DeVante Reid led the Blue and Gold with nine receptions and 113 receiving yards. Senior Noah Glantz led the defense with six total tackles, 2.5 tackles for a loss and one pass break-up. Laughlin's touchdown marked the first of his young-career while Barret registered his first two-touchdown game in his time as a Bantam.
