Box Score AMHERST, Mass. - Senior
Christine Taylor (Westport, Conn.) and rookie Izzy Deveney (Westport, Conn.) scored during the shootout to give the visiting Trinity College Bantams a 2-1 victory over the Amherst College Mammoths in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) field hockey action this evening at Hill Field. Trinity, ranked No. 11 in the nation, closes out the regular season with an 11-4 overall record and a 6-4 record in the NESCAC, while No. 7-ranked Amherst finishes with same marks. The win clinches a home game for the Bantams in the NESCAC Championship Quarterfinals on Saturday.
Trailing, 1-0, at halftime, despite allowing just two shots in the first two quarters, the Bantam offense was aggressive in the second half with five penalty corners and 10 shots. After a botched penalty corner, Trinity junior
Riley Nichols (Austin, Texas) stole the ball in the Mammoth backfield and bounced to Frank from the right before Frank smacked it into the cage to tie the score at 1-1. Amherst goalie Sara Nidus saved a penalty stroke by Deveney in the fourth quarter and Trinity sophomore
Katrina Winfield (Wilmington, Del.) had a one-on-one against Nidus in the closing seconds but misfired wide.
In the first overtime, Trinity fired six shots and yielded none and Bantam senior forward
Caelin Flaherty (Upton, Mass.) was denied by Nidus on another penalty stroke for the visitors. Bantam sophomore goalkeeper
Olivia McMichael (Glenside, Pa.) made two saves in the last 35 seconds of the second overtime, as the Mammoths were awarded two penalty corners with no time on the clock. Taylor opened the shootput with a goal and McMichael stopped all four Amherst attempts. Deveney scored on Trinity's third attempt by bouncing the ball on her stick over Nidus' head and them catching it behind her and knocking it into the cage. Trinity, which had been 0-2 on shootouts this fall, won this one, 2-0. Nidus finished with 13 saves and McMichael had five.
