Trinity Football Faces First Big Test At Undefeated Williams Saturday

HARTFORD, Conn. - The Trinity College football team, which survived an early scare at Colby last weekend, coming back from a 12-0 deficit in the third quarter to win, 35-12, against the Mules, 43-7, is 6-0 and remain tied with Wesleyan and Williams for first place in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC).  The Bantams head to Williamstown, Mass. on Saturday, October 30 for a 1:30 p.m. game against the Ephs.  Coached by Jeff Devanney (16th season, 102-19), Trinity has lost two games in a row to Williams, which evened the all-time series between the historic rival at 38-38-2 with a 29-15 victory in Hartford two seasons ago.  Trinity and Williams are ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the latest New England Football Writers Division III Poll: 1. Trinity (6-0), 2. Williams (6-0), 3. Salve Regina (7-1), 4. Wesleyan (6-0), 5. Endicott (6-2), 6. Framingham State (5-2), T7. Bridgewater State (5-2), T7. Western New England (5-3), 9. Anna Maria (5-1), 10. Mass.-Dartmouth (5-2).

At Colby, Trinity scored 35 points in 20:11 to race past the Mules. Junior QB Spencer Fetter (Winter Park, Fla.) connected with senior TE Jack Barrett (Holliston, Mass.) for Trinity's first score with 6:08 left in the third quarter, and sophomore LB Luca de Lancellotti (Santa Ana, Calif.) forced and recovered a fumble to set up classmate William Kirby (Darien, Conn.) for the go-ahead touchdown on a three-yard run.  Fetter tossed three more touchdowns, from 40 yards out to rookie WR Mathew Laughlin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine), from three yards away again to Barrett, and from 22 yards out to senior captain WR Jonathan Girard (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.).  Fetter completed 27 of 33 passes for 320 yards and four touchdowns and was named as the NESCAC Offensive Player of the Week for his effort. Kirby netted a career-high 139 on 24 carries, while senior captain WR DeVante Reid (London, England) had a game-high nine receptions for 113 yards. Senior DL Noah Glantz (Scarsdale, N.Y.) paced the defense with six tackles, 2.5 tackles for a loss, a sack and a pass breakup, and junior Justin O'Neil-Riley (Dorchester, Mass.) blocked a Colby PAT.

Trinity tops the NESCAC in nine different categories, including scoring offense (37.0), scoring defense (11.3), total offense (449.7 ypg), total defense (258.8 ypg), rushing defense (61.8 ypg), pass offense (316.5 ypg), pass efficiency (189.9 QB rating), sacks allowed (6), third-down conversions (45.9%), red zone offense (27 for 32 with 25 TDs), and time of possession (35:13 per game). Fetter tops the league in passing (306.3 ypg), with 20 touchdown passes against just one interception, and total offense (325 ypg), while Kirby is third in the conference with 533 rushing yards including 10 touchdowns. Reid and Girard are among the conference's top four in receptions and receiving yards with a combined 87 grabs for 1,281 yards while Girard adds a league-best 10 touchdown catches. Kirby also ranks third in all-purpose yards with 662, followed by Reid in fifth with 656, and Girard in seventh with 629.  On defense, senior Noah Glantz (Scarsdale, N.Y.) is tied for the NESCAC lead in sacks (4), followed by junior DL Joseph Lepore (Winchester, Mass.) and sophomore DL Cooper Mandel (Ramsey, N.J.), while Glantz also ranks second in tackles for loss (10).  Senior captain DB Matt McCarthy (North Reading, Mass.) paces Trinity in tackles with 30 and senior captain L Brian Casagrande (Madison, Conn.) adds 28 tackles.

Williams, coached by Mark Raymond (6th Season), has defeated five opponents by at least 17 points but did have a close call with a three-point win (32-29) at Tufts on September 25. The Ephs are second to Trinity in both scoring offense and defense and lead the conference in rushing with 214 yards per contest. Senior QB Bobby Maimaron is a dual threat with 352 rushing yards for five touchdowns and 1,134 passing yards for 11 scores.  Joel Nicholas and Mario Fischetti have combined for 587 more yards on the ground and senior WR Frank Stola has 303 receiving yards despite missing two games. Senior LB T.J Rothmann has 32 tackles and four sacks, while fellow LB Coleston Smith lead the Ephs with 39 tackles.  None of the Ephs' or the Bantams' first six opponents this fall have a .500 or better record, but both face each other, Amherst (4-2), and undefeated Wesleyan to close the year.
