Trinity Women's Soccer Falls In Overtime At Amherst In NESCAC Quarters

AMHERST, Mass.-- Ruby Hastie scored both goals, including the gamewinner in the 96th minute, to lead the Amherst College Mammoths to a 2-1 victory in overtime against the visiting Trinity College Bantams in the quarterfinals of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Women's Soccer Championship Tournament this afternoon at Hitchcock Field.  Trinity ends the year at 7-8-1, having lost twice in overtime (3-2 on Tuesday) on the road to the No. 15-ranked Mammoths in five days.  Amherst, seeded No. 1 in the tournament advances to the semifinals next weekend on its campus.  Senior captain Caroline Sullivan (North Hampton, N.H.) scored for Trinity, seeded No. 8 in the tourney.

Both teams had chances in the first half, despite a frenetic pace of play. There were 24 total shots in the first half, Trinity with eight, and Amherst with 11. Trinity's defense remained strong throughout, as sophomore Lexi Hasbrouck (Hopkinton, Mass.) was particularly effective breaking up Amherst's breakaway runs. The Amherst offense was aggressive but Trinity maintained possession of the ball in the back end of opening stanza. Trinity senior goalkeeper Jennifer Stuart (Newburyport, Mass.) made six saves before the break, while classmate Whitney Hoban (Winnetka, IL) had an opportunity in the 8th minute of the game when she beat a Mammoth defender and rifled a shot just left of the goal.

The scoreless first half was answered by two goals less than a minute apart late in the game. Amherst came out strong again in the second half, applying consistent pressure on Trinity's backline from the jump. In the second half, Amherst totaled 18 shots as opposed to Trinity's 11.  Hastie scored the first goal of the game from just outside the box, as her shot was just under the cross bar and barely out of Stuart's reach.  Just 52 seconds later, the Bantam offense forced its ninth corner kick of the day, and Sullivan knocked the ball in past Mammoth goalkeeper Mika Fisher directly off the beautiful corner strike by sophomore midfielder Sadie Rudolph (Weston, Conn).

Stuart made another terrific save, one of her 13 stops in the contest, on a free kick by Sophia Fikke with eight minutes to go in overtime, but Hastie broke through again in the 96th minute with a shot that hit the goal post before finding the back of the net. Hastie had scored the game-winner in overtime against the Bantams on Tuesday as well.  Fisher held the Bantams at bay with six saves in regulation, but Trinity did not put a shot on net during the extra time.
