Trinity Women's Lacrosse Loses Heartbreaker To Wesleyan

Box Score

Hartford, Conn. – Senior attacker Johanna Copeland (Hanover, N.H.) scored six goals to lead the visiting Wesleyan University Cardinals to a 16-15 win over the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) West Division women's lacrosse action this afternoon at Robin L. Sheppard Field. Trinity, ranked No. 15 in the nation, falls to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the conference, while the No. 13-ranked Cardinals improve to 2-2 overall and 2-1 in the division.  Trinity senior tri-captain attacker Katrina Angelucci (Weston, Mass.) matched Copeland with six goals, as the Bantams suffered their second one-goal loss in the division in as many days with Saturday's 11-10 setback at No. 24-ranked Hamilton.  The teams will be back at it on Friday, April 23 at Wesleyan at 6 p.m.

The game was close throughout with neither team leading by more than three goals the entire 60 minutes.  Trinity took its last lead at 11-10 early in the second half on a superb individual move down the middle by Angelucci at the 28:48 mark, but the Bantams did not score again for the next 21:15.  Wesleyan scored four times during the Trinity drought to go ahead, 14-11, with two goals coming from rookie Laura Baine (Rye, N.Y.).  Bantam junior Christine Taylor (Westport, Conn.) and Angelucci scored back-to-back to cut the home team's deficit to 14-13 with 4:20 remaining, and Wesleyan's Gil Horst (Pomfret, Conn.) and Angelucci traded goals to make it 15-14 at the 1:45 mark.  Copeland scored on a free position 20 seconds later, followed by a player-up, free-position goal by Trinity sophomore attacker Lily Ives (Chappaqua, N.Y.) with 1:09 on the clock.  Taylor got off a decent look from the right wing to tie the game in the final minute that was stopped by Cardinal junior goalie Corin Grady (Philadelphia, Pa.), and Wesleyan was able to run out the clock.

In the first half, the team took turns taking one-goal leads until the visitors went ahead, 9-7, on a goal by sophomore Kendall Mittleman (East Islip, N.Y.) 7:03 before the break.  Ives and Trinity junior midfielder Samantha Booma (Marblehead, Mass.) scored in the final four minutes before halftime, and Taylor scored a player-up goal 22 seconds into the second half to tie the game for the final time at 10-10.  Taylor finished with four goals to give Trinity 10 tallies between her and Angelucci, and added a pair of caused turnovers.  Booma and Ives each scored twice, and seniors Sophie Berger (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and Olivia Weckwerth (Westborough, Mass.) notched two assists apiece.  Bantam senior Marcella Flibotte (Cohasset, Mass.) collected four ground balls and two caused turnovers, while junior Emma Alpaugh (Darien, Conn.) had five draw controls, and Vitale and junior Gabriella Young (Raleigh, N.C.) combined for four Trinity saves.  Horst finished with three goals and three assists, while senior defender Indigo Pellegrini de Paur (New Canaan, Conn.) had five ground balls and five caused turnovers against Trinity, senior Rylee White (Duxbury, Mass.) added a game-high eight draw controls, and Corin and Abby Wolk (Parkland, Fla.) combined for eight saves for Wesleyan.
