Trinity Baseball Wins Pair Against Colby

Hartford, Conn. – The Trinity College Bantams returned from a 26-day layoff to sweep the visiting Colby College Mules, 11/5-1/4 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division baseball doubleheader (7/7) this afternoon on Murren Family Field at DiBenedetto Stadium.  Trinity improves to 7-3 overall and goes to 2-0 in the NESCAC East, while the Mules drop to 7-9 overall and 1-5 in the division.  The teams will complete the four-game, home-and-home series tomorrow in Waterville, Maine.

Trinity dominated the opener, pounding 11 hits and scoring its 11 runs in the first four innings.  First-year SS Jack Mathews (Westport, Conn.) led off the bottom of the first inning with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore 3B Patrick Dillon (Bronx, N.Y.).  Bantam senior LF Vince Capone (Ambler, Pa.) then doubled and scored on a single by rookie 1B Sean Meth (Sands Point, N.Y.).  The Bantams added a third run in the second inning on back-to-back triples by rookie outfielders Yoshi Omi-Jarrett (Mill Valley, Calif.) and John Flannigan (Syosset, N.Y.).

Trinity broke the game open in the third frame with five more runs.  Omi-Jarrett and Flannigan each had two RBIs in the inning and Omi-Jarrett drove in another run with a two-out single during Trinity's three-run fourth inning.  Bantam junior RHP Jimmy Fahey (Danbury, Conn.) went six innings and allowed three hits and an unearned run with three strikeouts to improve to 1-1, while Omi-Jarrett finished 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs.  Senior Patrick Carbone (Marshfield, Mass.) pitched seven outs of scoreless relief with three K's and Caleb Jung (La Mirada, Calif.) had two hits for the Mules in the first game.

The Bantams won the second game in dramatic fashion, walking off on a solo homer well over the left field fence by senior co-captain Alex Rodriguez (Windsor, Conn.) after the Mules had tied the game with two runs in the top of the seventh inning.  Colby struck first in the second inning on an RBI double by sophomore Pepe Villamil (New York, N.Y.), but Trinity got the lead right back with two runs in the bottom of the second on an RBI double by first-year Bennett Teceno (Centerville, Mass.) and a two-run single by Rodriguez.

Colby scored once in the fifth frame on a solo shot by freshman Brady O'Brien (North Andover, Mass.) and tied it in the seventh on three singles to load the bases, a sacrifice fly, and a two-out, run-scoring hit by senior Andrew Russell (Massapequa, N.Y.).  Rodriguez' heroics gave Trinity its fifth win in a row, and he finished 2-for-3 with a run and three RBIs.  Trinity junior starter Cameron Crowley (Downers Grove, Ill.) went 5.1 innings and allowed five hits and two runs with seven strikeouts and two walks, but senior co-captain Justin Olson (Avon, Conn.) recorded the final Mule out to improve to 2-0.  O'Brien was 3-for-4 and Russell was 2-for-3, while freshman Patrick McConnell (Andover, Mass.) took the game-two loss in relief for Colby.
