Box Score Hartford, Conn. – The Trinity College men's lacrosse program took its first loss of the season in stunning fashion, conceding the game's final goal with 10 seconds left in overtime for a 9-8 final against Williams. The Bantams (3-1, 1-1 NESCAC) took an early lead before playing catch-up, and was able to tie the game with two minutes remaining in regulation to force overtime.
First-year
Dane Crowley (Pelham, N.Y.) went 11-19 in the faceoff circle, and finished with a game-high five ground balls. Classmate
Cooper Yaccino (Kenilworth, Ill.) played exceptional in net despite the loss, making 11 saves on the day.
After Trinity opened the season with 58 goals through three games, Saturday's game saw something different for both sides: a scoreless first quarter. Despite a combined 18 shots total for each side, the first 15 minutes saw a physical, but uneventful end to the frame.
The Bantams got on the board less than three minutes into the second quarter to break the stalemate, seeing junior
Reid McDonald (Aldie, Va.) put the Bantams ahead. After a Williams goal knotted the score, sophomore
Tucker Sheehan (Pomfret, Conn.) and junior
Harrison Ike (Allentown, Pa.) notched goals to regain the lead with 7:15 left in the half. McDonald connected with Ike once again at the five-minute marker for his second of the game before Williams' Corey Lund scored his second of the game to make it 4-2. With just under three minutes, the Ephs struck again, but Trinity was able to hold onto the 4-3 lead until halftime.
Williams opened up the second half with a man-up goal from Pearse Glavin with 13:26 left in the third; he followed up his first goal with his second at the 7:22 mark to give the hosts a 5-4 lead. With inside a minute left in the frame, the Ephs would make it 6-4 on a man-up goal to put Trinity in a hole to start the fourth quarter.
The two teams traded goals to start the final frame. Sophomore
Andrew Fearey (Duxbury, Mass.) brought the Bantams within one with his first goal of the game to start the fourth, but a quick Williams goal made it 7-5 with 9:36 remaining. Nearly a minute later, sophomore
William Puccio (Garden City, N.Y.) brought the Bantam within one, but Williams' Zachary Romrell made it 8-6 with 4:45 remaining.
With 1:47 remaining, junior
David DeMartino (South Windsor, Conn.) notched his first goal of the game to make it 8-7 before first-year
Andrew Bailey (Madison, N.J.) found the back of the net in a man-up situation for his second career goal, forcing overtime in Williamstown.
In a physical four-minute overtime, it was Williams who found the back of the net. With 10 seconds remaining in OT, Romrell ripped twine to give Williams the 9-8 overtime win, and handing Trinity its first loss of the season.
The Bantams return to play in its regular-season finale at Wesleyan on Sunday, May 2, with game time slated for 3 p.m.
