NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior Molly Cronin (Wellesley, Mass.) scored 15 points and made the game-winnng basket with 12 seconds left as the Connecticut College women's basketball team triumphed over the visiting Trinity College Bantams by a 53-51 score in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) action at Charles B. Luce Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore
Tori Varsamis (Belmont, Mass.) scored a game-high 16 points for Trinity, which falls to 10-4 overall and 3-1 in the NESCAC with its first loss in five games. The Bantams host league rival Middlebury on Friday, January 28 at 7 p.m. The Camels improve to 3-13 overall and 1-3 in the NESCAC while snapping a six-game losing skid with conference foe Williams visiting them on Friday.
Trinity trailed by six after three quarters, 41-35, but battled back and tied the game at 45-all with 6:10 on the clock after a 3-pointer by rookie guard
Hannah Marzo (Shrewsbury, Mass.). The game remained close the rest of the way with Trinity tying it for a final time at 51-51 on an old-fashioned 3-point play by junior
Samantha Gallo (Northford, Conn.) with 1:23 remaining. Cronin scored the clincher on an off-balance shot, and the Bantams got the ball inside to Gallon in the final seconds but her attempt was off the mark. Trinity, which entered the game undefeated in conference play, advanced the ball by calling a timeout and had plenty of time to at least tie the score and force overtime.
Samantha Gallo got a good look down low to knot the score, but she was defended well by Oberman-Levine with help from senior Emily Tripp (Westport, Mass.). Gallo's shot missed off the backboard and was rebounded by Tripp as the buzzer sounded to allow the Camels to escape with their first NESCAC win.
Connecticut College, which never trailed, had led, 15-7, after one quarter and, 24-10, late in the second, but sophomore center
Reilly Campbell (Wallingford, Conn.) keyed an 8-0 run with a bucket plus a free throw that helped the Bantams cut the lead to seven at 26-19 at intermission. The Bantams, who outscored the hosts in three of the four quarters, continued chipping away at the deficit in the third and brought the margin down to four twice in the frame. Varsamis, who only shot from beyond the arc, nailed one of her three tries from downtown to make it 39-35 to conclude the quarter. Campbell and Gall joined Varsamis in double figures in scoring with 10 and 12 points, respectively. Campbell also grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked two shots and Gallo had six boards. Connecticut College was paced by Cronin and junior Jaycie Rojik (Scituate, Mass.) who scored 13 points
