Trinity Women's Swimming And Diving Sinks Springfield

HARTFORD, Conn. - Rookies Isabella Tagliaferro (Bedford, N.H.) and Madeleine Wambach (Boston, Mass.) each won two individual races and two relays to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 184.5-114.5 shellacking of the visiting Springfield College Pride in women's swimming and diving action this evening at Trinity Natatorium.  Trinity finishes the dual-meet season at 3-3 and the Pride drop to 4-9 with one meet at home against Amherst on Sunday remaining.  The Bantam divers will compete in the RPI Diving Invitational next weekend with the New England Small College Athletic Conference Championships to follow the weekend after.  Trinity took first in 11 events.

Tagliaferro, Wambach, senior Serena Ly (Newton, Mass.), and sophomore Morgan Lenoce (Westport, Conn.) opened the meet with a winning time of 1:49.72 in the 200-yard medley relay.  Tagliaferro also won the 50-yard freestyle (24.86) and the 100-yard free (24.86), while Wambach touched first in the 100-yard butterfly (57.61) and the 200-yard fly (26.20).  Ly added a winning performance in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:10.09 and Lenoce also won the 100-yard backstroke at 59.70.  Lenoce, Taglieferro, Wambach, and senior Aurelia Umholtz (Flagstaff, Ariz.) closed the meet by taking first in the 400-yard free relay with a time of 3:38.85.

Trinity junior Rachel Papalski (Flemington, N.J.) also impressed tonight with a pair of victories in the freestyle, winning the 200-yard race at 1:58.74 and the 500-yard event with a time of 5:20.72.  Umholtz came in second in both the 200-yard free (1:02.03) and the 500-yard free (5:27.61).  The Bantams also took the top two places in the 1,000-yard freestyle thanks to a winning time of 11:04.07 by first-year Julianna Rieker (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and a second-place time of 11:10.12 by senior tri-captain Zoryanna Matlashewski (Anoka, Minn.).  In diving, senior Olivia Ramos (Weston, Mass.) was second off the three-meter board with a score of 174.68 and first-year Bridget Kahan (Lewiston, Maine) was second off the one-meter board at 171.60.
