Trinity Women's Basketball Clips Colby For Second Road Overtime Win In Two Days

WATERVILLE, Maine - Sophomore Reilly Campbell (Wallingford, Conn.) scored the game-tying and game-winning baskets in the final ten seconds to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to a 52-50 overtime against the Colby College Mules in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's basketball action this afternoon.  The victory completes an exciting weekend for the Bantams who opened conference play yesterday with a 60-57 overtime triumph on the road at No. 13-ranked Bowdoin.  Trinity improves to 9-3 overall, while Colby drops to 9-2 overall and 1-1 in the league.  Up next, Trinity visits Mitchell on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Trailing, 49-45, early in the extra frame, Trinity closed to within a point on a 3-pointer by sophomore Tori Varsamis (Belmont, Mass.) with 3:20 remaining.  Caroline Smith made a free throw to make it, 50-48, with 34 seconds left but Trinity first-year guard Indianna Del Rocco (Branford, Conn.) fed Campbell for a jumper that tied the game at 50-all inside the 10-second mark.  Bantam senior tri-captain guard Bailey Hyland (Broad Brook, Conn.) came up with a steal and the Bantams executed a beautiful inbounds play with Delrocco lofting the ball to Campbell who caught it while cutting to the basket and scored at the buzzer.

"I was incredibly impressed with our team's resilience this weekend," said Trinity Head Coach Emily Garner. "We showed poise and composure in big moments, and stayed together through tremendous amounts of adversity. I'm excited for this group and ready to get back to work to prepare for more NESCAC play."

The game was close throughout, although Trinity led, 41-32, in the fourth quarter after a Del Rocco trey at the 8:28 mark.  Colby scored 11 points in a row to go ahead, 43-41, but the Bantams recovered and took a 45-43 lead on back-to-back layups by Hyland and Reilly.  Chiamaka Ubani forced the overtime for the Mules with a layup at the 1:03 mark and the home team had the ball at the end of regulation but missed twice from the outside.

Campbell and fellow sophomore Samantha Gallo (Northford, Conn.) paced Trinity with 12 points and seven rebounds apiece, while Del Rocco added 11 points, six boards, and three assists.  Hyland finished with nine points and senior tri-captain center Liz Althoff (Staten Island, N.Y.) contributed four assists and a blocked shot.  Trinity outrebounded Colby, 34-26, to offset 25 turnovers.  Trinity's defense held Colby to 32.8 percent shooting from the field and just four 3-pointers in 18 tries.
