Field Hockey Delivers 2-0 Shutout Over Bowdoin in NESCAC Quarterfinals

The Bantams will play in the NESCAC Semifinals on November 5.

HARTFORD, Conn. — With three penalty corner opportunities, the Trinity College field hockey team capitalized on a pair with first-year Maeve Hymovitz (Needham Heights, Mass.) on the inserts to blank Bowdoin College, 2-0, on their home turf in the New England Small College Athletic Conference Quarterfinals on Saturday. The Bantams improved to 13-3 overall and 8-3 in the league, while the Polar Bears' concluded their season 11-5 and 6-5.

Coming off the bench for the Bantams, Ashley Zigler notched the first goal after Hymovitz inserted the ball to Caelin Flaherty (Upton, Mass.), who passed it to Elle Fair (Westport, Conn.) then to Jackie Frank (Longmeadow, Mass.) as she setup Zigler to squeak a shot passed the goalkeeper in the left corner of the net 28 minutes into contest. With less than nine minutes remaining the final quarter, Katrina Winfield (Willington, Del.) tipped in the ball into the right corner for an insurance goal after Fair sent the shot across the defensive circle from Flaherty who was posted near the top of the circle. The Polar Bears had the opportunity to tally the equalizer after a penalty corner in the third corner, but Flaherty cut off the shot by Georgie Coetzer.

Trinity kept Bowdoin off the board and only allowed four shots in regulation as Olivia McMichael (Glenside, Penn.) made one save in the first quarter to prevent Faith Jennings for recording the first goal of the game. The Polar Bears were held to a pair of shots in the first and third quarters but couldn't get one off in the other two quarters. Trinity outshot the visitors 7-4 and 5-1 on target, with Winfield and Flaherty leading the charge with four and a pair of goal each.

Trinity will play No. 2 Tufts University on November 5 at 1:30 p.m. in the NESCAC Semifinals at Middlebury College.
