HARTFORD, Conn. —
Jelani Adorno (Tariffville, Conn.) notched her second goal of the season with five and a half minutes remaining in the second period for the eventual game-winning goal in the Trinity College women's ice hockey 2-0 shutout over the University of New England on Saturday in their home opener at the Koeppel Community Sports Center. The Bantams improved to 2-2 overall, while the Nor'easters fell to 5-4. Trinity stays at home as it faces Salem State University on Sunday with a 6 p.m. matchup.
Claudia Capone (Foxboro, Mass.) launched one at the net at 4:51 but the visiting goalkeeper Delanie Corcoran nabbed a save, and the puck was rebounded by
Ethel Wilhelmsson (Stockholm, Sweden) whose attempt went wide but Adorno forced a turnover in a tight battle with a Nor'easter defender before the forward snuck the puck past Corcoran to put Trinity up, 1-0. The Bantams had a chance to wipe the zero off the scoreboard earlier in the period when Corcoran fell to her knees left of the cage, but first-year
Lillian Cassidy (Aspen, Colo.) couldn't muster a clean shot a foot in front of the net before the goalie regained her balance.
The University of New England diverted tactics late in the final period as Corcoran abandoned the net so a sixth Nor'easter could take the ice, however Wilhelmsson padded the lead with an insurance goal, her first of the season, of a long pass from Adorno, whose notched her first career assist in the Navy & Gold. Capone had a chance to stack a second goal for Trinity 15 minutes into the final period but Maeve Crehan stole the puck two feet left of the net and denied the senior co-captain a clean shot as the pair were the only skaters across the blueline.
Trinity played aggressive on offense as they made 42 shots, with seven coming off the stick of Capone, six from
Jenny Guider (Ridgefield, Conn.) and five from Wilhelmsson. Corcoran made 39 saves for the Nor'easters, while
Stephanie Garvis (Plymouth, Minn.) stopped 21. The visitors kept vigilant with the onslaught of shots with 11 blocked, while the home team made two by first-year
Annabelle Merkel (Chicago, Ill.) and
Corinne Bolding (Northfield, Vt.).
