SPRINGFIELD, Mass. —
Reilly Campbell (Wallingford, Conn.) posted her seventh double-double of the season with 12 rebounds and 10 points and helped the Trinity College women's basketball team post a 59-57 victory over Skidmore College on Saturday. Campbell wasn't the only Bantam shining on the hardwood as
Bria Fuller (Springdale, Md.),Â
Lucy Dorion (Needham, Mass.) and
Frankie Silva (Auburndale, Mass.) all recorded 10 points, while
Hannah Marzo (Shrewsbury, Mass.) put up nine. Trinity opens the new year with its first New England Small College Athletic Conference matchup on January 6 at home against Colby College with a 7 p.m. tip.
Trinity went on a 5-0 run to open the first quarter off two quick layups in the paint by Fuller and
Emma Wax (Pine Brook, N.J.) before the Thoroughbreds pulled up for a good three-pointer a minute and a half into the game. Campbell went airborne for her second of a dozen rebounds almost halfway into the quarter which lead to swift layup by Marzo off the hands of Wax to extend the lead to four. Trinity played aggressively on either side of the ball with five rebounds, a steal by Marzo and a blocked basket by
Tori Varsamis  (Belmont, Mass.). Skidmore took its first lead of the night off a layup by Julia Blanck to put the opponent up 10-9 followed by a layup from Sarah Chambers before Dorion went to the line to narrow the deficit to one.
Behind by four points, Campbell's back-to-back layups in the paint knotted the game at 15 apiece, with the second bucket setup by a defensive rebound from the junior and funneled into her hands off the pass from Wax. The game was neck-in-neck after the tying- shot for four minutes before Dorion's three-pointer off the defensive rebound and smooth pass from
Madison Stevens (Burlington, Conn.) ignited 8-3 run to close out the half. Fuller's jumper fed by an offensive rebound by Campbell and a perfectly placed pass by Marzo captured the highest lead of the game, 30-23, before the teams went into the locker room.
The Bantams continued to bring the heat with a jumper by Silva, a three-point basket and a layup by Marzo grew the lead to 11 as Trinity led 37-26 through the first three minutes of the third quarter. Back-to-Back threes by Silva and Dorion followed by a layup by the first-year extended the lead for Navy & Gold before the Thoroughbreds connected on a layup in the paint off the fingertips of Cassie Davidson. Trinity held on to the lead despite five-straight points for Skidmore cut the margin to eleven to close out the quarter.
Blanck continued to chip away at Trinity's lead with a layup in the opening 20 seconds of the final quarter but Fuller quickly stuffed the comeback with a three-pointer a minute later. With 3:23 left on the clock, Kate McCarney's three-pointer brought Skidmore to within one point of Trinity but the Bantams forced fouls and swished six points at the line to fortify the lead. A successful free throw by Varsamis sealed the 59-57 win despite a three-point buzzer-beater attempt by the visitors for the potential win.
Campbell and Wax each recorded five assists, with Wax also tallying a trio of steals. Trinity notched 26 points in the paint, with the bench putting up 17 points, capitalized on nine second-chance points and eight points off turnovers. Campbell was named the tournament MVP and Wax also graced the all-tournament squad.
