NEWTON, Mass. —The Trinity College women's basketball team extends its win streak to five as the Bantams outlasted the Lasell University Lasers, 68-51, on the road on Wednesday. Trinity improved to 8-1 on the season, while Lasell dropped to 2-6 overall. The team returns to Oosting Gymnasium on December 10 for a Pride Day matchup at 1 p.m. against the visiting Worcester State.
In the first minute of the opening quarter,
Indi DelRocco (Brandford, Conn.) pulled up for a layup to swish the first points of the contest off the quick hands of
Emma Wax (Pine Brook, N.J.). Two minutes later, Jasmine Depina stole the ball and allowed Juju Nealy net a jumpshot to knot the game at two a piece. Trinity went on an 8-3 run to take a seven-point lead before a jumper by Shirle Major narrowed the gap to within five and started a rally for the Lasers, who knotted the game at 18-18 with five seconds remaining in the first quarter.Â
The Lasers notched six points in the first two points off the hands of Major and Depina, who put up back-to-back layups before Wax's three-point jumper stopped the comeback. Two-straight layups by Campbell and Wax helped the Bantams regain a 25-24 lead followed by two made free throws by Nealy flipped the lead in favor of the home team, 26-25.
Madison Stevens (Burlington, Conn.) went to the line off a foul and put Trinity up by one before a made jumper by Brenna Graber shifted the lead by to the Lasers. Wax's jumpshot off the pass from Campbell snatched the lead back for the Bantams, who maintained a step ahead for the remainder of the game.Â
Theresa Twardosky (Merrimack, N.H.) made back-to-back buckets for five points, while teammate
Tori Varsamis  (Belmont, Mass.) swished for three points off the defensive rebound from Stevens with 40 seconds remaining before half to put Trinity up by five, 37-32.
In the third quarter, the Bantams grabbed a 15 point lead with a 12-2 run through eight minutes of play ignited by Campbell, who drove to the basket for a layup.
Bria Fuller (Springdale, Md.) connected on a two-point bucket thanks to a defensive rebound by
Frankie Silva (Auburndale, Mass,) followed by an airborne Twardosky off a turnover on the otherside of the court. Off her own offensive rebound, Wax capitalized on second-chance points followed by two-consecutive buckets by
Hannah Marzo (Shrewsbury, Mass.). Stevens assisted on back-to-back jumpshots by
Alaina Holmes (Troy, N.Y.) and
Samantha Slofkiss (Marlboro, N.J.) for the biggest lead so far in the game of 17, while Slofkiss went to the basket off a steal by Holmes. A three-pointer in the fourth quarter extended Trinity's lead to 19 after a defensive rebound stemming from a pass by Wax before the final score of 68-51.
Twardosky and Campbell had a team-leading 12 points each, while Varsamis and Wax both put up 11. Trinity combined for 37 rebounds with 16 second-chance points, 14 points off turnovers and six fast breaks. Marzo and Campbell both rebound five buckets and Wax nabbed four. The Bantams were well coordinated on the hardwood with 17 assists with seven coming off the hands of Stevens.
