HARTFORD, Conn. – Senior
Donald Jorden Jr., and first-year
Will Dorion each scored 15 points to lead the Trinity College men's basketball team over New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) opponent Amherst College on Friday night in Ray Oosting Gymnasium. The Bantams improve to 12-8 with a 3-5 mark in the conference while Amherst drops to 15-6 (5-4 NESCAC). Trinity has two games remaining in the 2021-22 regular season with Hamilton College visiting "The Coop" tomorrow for a 3 p.m. tilt while the Mammoths take on Connecticut College.
The Bantams started fast, jumping out to a six point lead and never trailed or surrendered the lead though all 40 minutes of action. Dorion paced the Bantams in the first half with 10 points including a 3-pointer at the 15:14 mark to give the home squad a 12-point advantage. Moments later, a driving layup by
C.J. Redd followed by a 3-pointer from the junior out of Peekskill, N.Y. gave the Bantams its largest lead of the night at 15. However, Amherst was able to answer with a nine-point run capped off by a Robinson Grant jumper and went into halftime trailing by six.
In the second half, another 3-pointer from Redd had the Blue and Gold on top of the Mammoths by nine but Amherst point-guard Garrett Day matched with a deep bucket of his own to spark an eight-point burst from the visitors that concluded with another 3-pointer from Day to cut the deficit to one point with just over five minutes to go. Following a timeout, Jorden went to work in the paint to add two points while
Ben Callahan-Gold came up with a big time block on the other end of the court which ultimately led to a trip to the line for Jorden who sunk both shots. A few possessions later, D.J Smith used his quickness to jump into the passing lane and take the ball away from Amherst, adding a layup in transition.
Jorden added 7 rebounds, one steal and one block to go along with his 15 points while Dorion chipped in five assists and four boards. Callahan-Gold led Trinity with eight rebounds while also recording nine points, two blocks and a clutch steal in the fourth quarter. Collectively, the Bantams shot 44% from the field while Amherst posted a 31.6 team field goal percentage. Robinson led the visitors with 14 total points.
